To the extent that they did actually show that in Fellowship, Peter Jackson thought it was complete BS.  "No way they'd take those big guys down" is an approximate quote.  I'm not sure why as the Director he had them do it anyways, I'd have to rewatch that particular commentary again.  It's the scene where Merry and Pippin start throwing rocks at Uruk-Hai that are running them and Boromir down.

If they threw something more specialized and violent, like the D&D "throwing dart" of legend, it might work.  c.f. give "lawn darts" to Hobbit children.  I'm old enough to have thrown an actual lawn dart, as a kid who could have killed himself / somebody else.

Well, obviously a rock is a poor substitute for proficiency with a real weapon, but l'il Hobbits, so running sucks, fighting sucks, hiding best, if possible.  -Thus, the suggestion for supporting from behind tanks you poo-pooed.  Lots of the Moria fighting is actually what I specifically had in mind -as long as they could stay in throwing rocks, anyway- floors, a lot of doorway bottlenecks helping v. numbers and effective opportunities to make a rush a lot harder to get through alive for OrcX, 'cause he can't see so good while Boromir runs him through.

Rock in the face = distraction at best for OrcX.

I'm not sure I ever saw the whole movie - meh.

Moria had multiple tunnels with different directions the enemy could conceivably come.  I think in the 1978 cartoon, Gandalf says to leave the eastern door ajar as they mustn't get shut in.  I don't know if that follows the book or is gratuitious invention.  Regardless, they could not afford to fight static battles in Moria, anywhere.  The risk of being surrounded by enemies coming from another direction was far too great.

Your formation also does nothing against the line wrecking Cave Troll of Fellowship.  They did also have a troll in the 1978 cartoon, but he wasn't some big centerpiece.  Frodo gets the spear in the chest from an Orc chieftan, not a troll.

Pippin actually just fights "regularly" in Gondor, with a sword.  Merry rides with Eowyn on a horse.  Frodo and Sam go to Mordor.  After the fellowship breaks, there aren't any opportunities for "hobbit missile" tactics.  Well except in the books when they come back to the Shire and have to fight Sharky.  I think they used bows then.

It seems to:

Quote
An event in the Battles of the Fellowship at Moria; see that entry for an overview:

    'Trapped!' cried Gandalf....

'Slam the doors and wedge them!' shouted Aragorn....

'No!' said Gandalf. 'We must not get shut in. Keep the east door ajar! We will go that way, if we get a chance.'....

'There is no sound outside here yet,' said Aragorn, who was standing by the eastern door listening.... 'We cannot block the door. Its key is gone and the lock is broken, and it opens inwards. We must do something to delay the enemy first. We will make them fear the Chamber of Mazarbul!'....

The Fellowship of the Ring, LoTR Book 2, Ch 5, The Bridge of Khazad-dûm

You. had. to. google. it. :(

That's late in Moria.  Most of the way was random dungeon encounters, rarely numbers to worry about being encircled unless they got pinned down too long.  They had them a Dwarf along, and his people built the place and he'd actually seen maps.

Full marks on the profound wrongness of that avatar, GIMP whiz. ;b;

I don't remember any other fights in Moria before they're in that room.  The whole point was that they were trying to move by stealth, then Pippin pulls the bonehead maneuver of throwing a stone down a well.  Which they dialed to Eleven in Fellowship, having him drop an entire skeleton and rusty bucket instead.

I went to CivFanatics and Apolyton today and posted my AAR.  My accounts needed avatars, and I thought Aki would be better for that.   I figured, since she actually is the best human faction IMO, and I wrote this epic AAR using her, I should perhaps not sport the Hive colors so much.  But then I thought, people might think I'm a woman, and I didn't want to give up my tagline, "Chairman Yang is watching you".  So I took a page out of the Dadaist / Surrealist pagebook and pasted up her eyes.  I think they figured out quite awhile ago that it's creepy.  Granted it is also Cubist.  Small possibility that now people will think I'm transgendered, but at least they will think, instead of passively receiving an image.  Good "WTF?" for advertizing an AAR.

Poncho dlv and I will be playing Monday late morning CST. It will be up about 1 hour to 2 hours later depending on how fast or slow Youtube is that day.

Pre game talk, though, should be up by Sunday late night or early Monday morning CST depending on how late my Sunday DnD session goes.

I ain't no topic Nazi and don't allow anyone else to get TOO carried away with that here -but we're drowning Green's topic now...

;b; for intiative -I'd seen you'd done that- and Geo? he had already said all that about the avi, and I would have pointed it out sooner except we're too much OT already.

The righteous need not cower before the drumbeat of human progress. Though the song of yesterday fades into the challenge of tomorrow, God still watches and judges us. Evil lurks in the datalinks as it lurked in the streets of yesteryear. But it was never the streets that were evil.
