With 5 human players, diplomacy will be much more complicated than just 3 vs 1.
However, by binding agreement, I wasn't merely speaking about pacts but also any informal agreement. Things like "I won't build the Neural Amplifier if you give me this future tech" or "Let me build a base on this island in your territory, cancel vendetta and I'll share with you my infiltration of Faction X"... Anything goes.
I'd like my partners to be true to their word.

Check out Iran and their promises that they won't build nuclear weapons. Is it good enough? No. US demands regular checks by their "probe teams". As in real life, not everyone us trust worthy but let us know if someone's a liar. Hmm... Maybe we should have some kind of meta-game reputation system bind to player's profile? You know, after each game we can vote on player's trustworthiness?

Of all people that I know, I hold grudges the longer (if not forever). In games too.
So I'll quote Velocyrix:
Quote
Diplomacy is about human interaction. If you’ve got a reputation as a backstabber, like it or not, memories last longer than a single game, and you may find yourself stacking the deck against you in later games by running roughshod over allies in the game you’re currently involved in.
and add that I'll try to make sure someone who fooled me will not win.
Call it game rage!  or just psychorigid rightfulness!  :D

If one wants an agreement with the Gaians, with a good agreement comes great responsibility.   ;)

If possible, it would be great to keep real world politics out of the thread. Especially US foreign policy in context of trustworthiness

I hear you, my friend! I, too, lament the morality of many a contemporary player. Alas, long gone is virtue, honour and simple decency. However, I’m afraid that others, wolves in sheep’s clothing as they are, would raise outcry that your idea runs counter to the spirit of multiplayer games, that not being double-tricked is your luxury and your own responsibility. Yes, such is the current state of affairs and it makes me weep. ‘But what can I do, Kirov?’, I hear you asking. It’s quite simple, my friend. Learn to trust me and me only. Other SMAC players are the scum of the earth.

And congratulations of the Secrets of the Human Brain!

Peter of the Drones, have you seen your turn?

Vishniac, congrats for the Secrets of The Human Brain. I have to say that I'm a little embarassed, my +2 research was not enough. Maybe my people is not motivated enough? I think I've got to kick some cyborgs ass during the next turns...

Damn, it would be a great thing to do.
I'd try to play SMAX on Android via Wine, just for the challenge.

If your phone had a USB port, I wonder if the operating system would run SMACX?  I understand you can run it directly off a thumb drive on a desk/laptop.
