NaNoWriMo 2013
« on: September 18, 2013, 03:04:18 AM »
NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. The idea is to write a 50,000-word novel in 30 days (from November 1 to November 30). You don't have to write a good novel - you're not in competition with anyone but yourself.

The idea is to encourage people who have a novel in their minds that wants to get out, or just an idea to boot around, to actually sit down and write it.

The "national" part of it is really international these days. I'm in Canada, and there are people from all over the world who take part.

Right now I'm trying to decide which story idea to run with - the crossover between Doctor Who and The Borgias (the TV series with Jeremy Irons as the Pope), a Star Trek Voyager musical crossover with some of my favorite Broadway plays, or a Fuzzy Knights story...

Anyone else here taking part?

You should do this instead of generating more pictures of [feminine washing] Vulcan.

Seeing as to how I am not really interested in such things, I am not planning to currently and do not have any plans to do so in the near future.

I'm afraid I couldn't write a 50,000 -word novel even if my life depended on it. ;)

Would it help to know that in all the years I've been trying this, I've never gotten anywhere near 50,000?  In this case, the journey really is more important than the destination, since it's given me practice, motivation, and a couple of good stories that I intend to finish later.

Ah, NaNoWriMo, the month of dreams and setting goals... and inevitably failing at those goals because life just gets in the way all the time, every time.

This used to be a tradition among my group of friends in high school, we'd all set out to write our 50,000-word novel, but none of us ever finished (that I know of).  I'm personally too lazy to commit to things like that, and everyone knows how unforgivably hard the life of a teenager is.  Haven't participated in NaNoWriMo in ages, but I might be tempted to give it a shot again this year...

Of course, I'll inevitably lose interest when the next free title comes out with Games for Gold on the Xbox, haha.

Still, to those of you who are going to attempt it, good luck, may the Force be with you, et cetera, et cetera.

But it would eat away time I could spent on Tau Ceti! :(

Now, THAT's a good idea.  Writers write, and this contest is as good a reason as any to get copy generated, which is job one.  Making it GOOD can be taken care of in the second draft.

Some background for the Tau Ceti mod would be very, very useful in a lot of ways - you've seen Darsnan get a lot of mileage out of that sort of thing with his mods, merely as introductory stories to go with scenarios.

Sounds like a decent plot... ;)
PREMISE.  There's a difference.

There's nothing in the NaNoWriMo rules that says you have to make your novel one continuous story. An anthology of short stories or vignettes is perfectly fine.

Hrm.  You know, I never even considered that until I read your post just now. XD
