Sorry about that. in the middle of switching computers due to my aformentioned virus problem. my new one just came yesterday, so now i should be good to go, assuming ALPHAX doesn't have compatibility issues with windows 8.

How difficult is it to set up a VM? I have a pretty big hard drive so space isn't to much of an issue.

VERY easy. Download VirtualBox and try it. It is pretty strait forward. You attach the winxp iso/cd to the cd of a new XP prepared VM (by wizard), turn it on and install as a normal comp would do.
