Questions re: December 2009 GOTM
« on: January 03, 2013, 02:27:54 PM »
Hi,

Long time SMAX player & forum lurker. I have 2 questions:

1. With the  Pirate "Marine" ability, I thought I could attack other ships with a land unit either from a transport or a base, but I can't. As per the updated Datalinks, can I only capture severely damaged ships and that's it?
2. Something I've never seen before. I have no idea what are the different coloured "OBJECTIVES" in the F4 screen.

Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks.

I think maybe you're talking about "What Lies Beneath", the November '09 GotM by Darsnan; there was no official GotM for December '09.

1. That's the Marine Detachment ability you're talking about, which is something different than Amphibious Assault.  It's a standard SMAX ability that works pretty much as you describe here.

2. Beats me.  You'll have to determine which GotM and author, though it's probably Darsnan.  I'll direct his attention here.

3. Welcome to AC2!  How did you find us?

You're right, its "What Lies Beneath", the November '09 GotM by Darsnan. My bad.

Though I never noticed anything in Darsnan's original post, I looked at it in the editor. and "Base facilities as objectives" is set in the "Scenario Victory" conditions. So I opened up F4 - Best Infrastructure and they lined up. I don't know the formula, but it seems to include the amount and quality of facilities, and secret projects. I must play around with it sometime. By the way, I love this scenario.

I've played thousands of hours of smac/x since 1999. I've been a member/lurker on other forums for a long time. I was googling why the We Play Civ site was down when I came across this site. Glad I did.

Hi Droom,

not my best work, but glad you like the scenario. I really can't remember what I was doing with the Objectives function at that time/ with this specific scenario (its been 3 years since I played SMACX), so can't shed any light on this. I do like that you are exploring around with the Scenario Editor and trying to determine on your own what is going on - much better than me trying to remember something like that. Also, as far as any other questions you have in the future - probably better to either take the same tack via exploring the game yourself, or use the existing resources here (i.e. people who play the game now) to answer your questions (i.e. I really can't remember anything in-depth about the game/ scenarios I built anymore).

Just wanted to apologize for not responding sooner. Real life issues. I haven't had much time to explore this feature. When I find anything out noteworthy, I'll post. Thanks BUncle and Darsnan for your replies.

And when the hourglass has run out, the hourglass of temporality, when the noise of secular life has grown silent and its restless or ineffectual activism has come to an end, when everything around you is still, as it is in eternity, then eternity asks you and every individual in these millions and millions about only one thing: whether you have lived in despair or not.
