Impossible to load either saves you provided on the forum. I get the following messages from the SMAX app:

"Error Reading File, etc."

or

"Alien Crossfire is running low on memory. Please save the game, quit, and increase the memory allocated, etc."

The problem is I can't increase the allocated memory because this is a carbon app running under Mac OS X.

And why on Chiron do I get two files?

I would be glad to be enlightened. Thanks.

Anyway, I was able to open the one you sent me by email so disregard my whining...
