Okay, how do I actually restore alt-tab on the GoG version?
« on: August 24, 2023, 03:44:48 PM »
So far, I've tried pracx, dxwnd, and disabling intro videos (which are all advertised as fixing alt-tab), and I've tried scient's 2.1 (which wasn't, but I was hopeful).

None of them seem to help to restore alt-tab to my gog version.  Which confuses me, because pracx is even a total replacement of terranx.exe.

Is there anything that actually works?  Am I doing something wrong?  The files look like they patched correctly.  Are there different files I need to replace?  Could I source the needed files from somewhere/someone else?  I don't have a CD drive anymore, so I can't install from my old disks.

I know ctrl-alt-tab works, but I'm not so pumped over having a core windows feature disabled.

Thanks in advance!

I do not know the answer about ALT-TAB, but since CTRL-ALT-TAB works, the difference is ceremonial.  Far from being a "core Windows feature", there's another pretty much equivalent way to do the same thing.  The keystrokes may be uncomfortable for you now, but I guarantee you, if you don't find an answer, then you're going to get used to it soon enough.

To restore Alt-Tab in SMAC, rename terran.exe to just about anything. For example, terran_GOG.exe. GOG deliberately disabled Alt-Tab because they thought it might introduce instabilities. However, their hack looks for a process specifically named terran.exe. Renaming the executable defeats the hack.

Edit: This advice also should work with terranx.exe

The righteous need not cower before the drumbeat of human progress. Though the song of yesterday fades into the challenge of tomorrow, God still watches and judges us. Evil lurks in the datalinks as it lurked in the streets of yesteryear. But it was never the streets that were evil.
