What about some help? I'm getting no ideas here:

What's it you're writing?  Something SMAC(x) related, I'm guessing?

Writing what you know is a good place to START, but for fiction, including scifi, there's no way to adhere to that... lit. not possible.
Having something relatable, no matter how mundane, gives a good jumping off point for critique ad IMPROVING writing, but once you're at least into the intermediate stage of your writing career (even if it doesn't pay) then keep an eye on ways to improve, actively seek critique, and be merciless on rewriting your works before posting/publishing.

...but that's just my opinion.
