Original Mac CD?

Hi guys,

Longtime lurker / macOS SMAC player here.

Apologies if this is against protocol, but does anyone know where I might find an image of the original Mac CD of SMAC?

I'm finding myself trying to play SMAC on emulated original hardware, rather than in a Windows VM, because of some sound differences, and because I prefer the slow animations for the true old SMAC experience. I've tried this in Windows 98 through 86box, an x86 emulator of old hardware, on my M1 Macbook Pro, and unfortunately the experience is correct, but totally unstable. Whatever caused the game to crash frequently back in 1999 seems to be much worse on emulated hardware. So, I wanted to try in a PowerPC emulator like SheepShaver. Sadly, however, I've lost my original SMAC install CD for Mac. I've searched around for copies but for whatever reason, I can't seem to find the original Mac CD image.

Asking for CD images is only legal (as far as I know) when a game is either declared abandonware by its rights-holding publisher, or the game has passed into the public domain due to no entity holding publishing rights anymore.  Neither applies to SMACX.  Further, even if you had the original CD image, it is highly unlikely you would be able to install from it: at least on PC, the installation program requires Flash, which is deprecated.  (That's why I was unable to install from my original PC CD recently.  And yes, I tried several Flash substitutes.)  At minimum, that could explain the stability issues you're seeing in Windows emulation.

While it won't be quite the same, your best recourse is to repurchase the game from GOG or a similar site.  While I could only find a Windows compatible version, GOG typically is good at addressing stability issues with old games, so it's likely you could avoid many headaches by purchasing it then emulating Windows.  It's only US $1.49 for SMAC and SMAX combined right now.

Funny thing... I accidentally got the Mac CD back in the day, had to send it back for Win ver. 
Made the mistake of letting a friend quote "BORROW" my SMAC games... they disappeared shortly after along with my fav game.
Not the first time that happened, so I -SHOULD- have known, don't lend games.... they don't come back.
