The Cutting Room Floor (tcrf.net)
« on: October 06, 2022, 06:09:20 PM »
The Cutting Room Floor (TCRF) is a wiki that specializes in highlighting ideas, assets, etc. that were dropped during development of a game.  They have a SMAC/X page (https://tcrf.net/Sid_Meier%27s_Alpha_Centauri) which could use some TLC.  I recently added bits on the two techs (Inertial Damping / Global Energy Theory) and ability (Heavy Transport) that are dummied out by default, but other info, such as on the dropped Triad idea, the secret factions, other gems buried in alpha(x).txt or blurbs(x).txt, etc. would be nice to add.  If you do decide to do so - have fun!

If there isn't much interest in editing the TCRF page directly, I'd still appreciate leads on abandoned concepts, artwork, Easter Eggs, etc. which would merit inclusion on the page.  I'll then add them myself.  I'm at least aware that the Triad system merits an entry, and some artwork like the XX missile; are there others?  And, do we have any specific information on how Triad would have worked?  I assume it would have been something like aerial > naval > ground > aerial but details are welcome.

Thanks - I appreciate it.  I'll take a look when work and grad school allows me to...

Any other leads or info for TCRF would also be welcome.

Once, on the Paean to SMAC blog, I asked Brian Reynolds if any faction ideas got left on the cutting room floor. He said no. There were no "discarded" factions.

Thanks, keep it coming.  Any other leads are appreciated.  Hopefully over Christmas break I can do the TCRF page a little justice.

I did some edits today on TCRF to capture the three unused facility quotes linked in this thread. Haven't had a chance to upload the sound files or the tech icons yet, maybe someone could help out?

The information about the inconsistency between the .wav files under the fx folder and the .mp3 files in voices comes from this old post by gwillybj on the Apolyton forums - I haven't checked all of them, but it sounds about right.

Also posted some links to Apolyton threads in the Discussion section about unused stats and abilities that are worth investigating.

Sorry, I haven't been around for a while and just now saw this.  In the middle of a Masters' Thesis this semester but I'll assist when I'm able.  Interesting stuff.

Thanks, MysticWind, for the adds. I added some more stuff to the page tonight, and some nominations for the "Did You Know" (TCRF's version of "In the News").  Any other edits or improvements are welcome, and hopefully some day I can go through the archived material linked to above...

Why do you insist that the human genetic code is 'sacred' or 'taboo'? It is a chemical process and nothing more. For that matter -we- are chemical processes and nothing more. If you deny yourself a useful tool simply because it reminds you uncomfortably of your mortality, you have uselessly and pointlessly crippled yourself.
