getting Multiplayer working on Mac?

i am a returning player and reinstalled the GOG version of SMAC/X on my Mac High Sierra. I am trying to play with my brother, on his PC on our home network via the TCP/IP method. I can find his hosted game (not vice versa) but when I try to join, the game hangs and kicks me back to the Home screen. anyone found a fix for this issue?

I don't know, as I don't do multiplayer or Mac.  I would suggest the Command Nexus subforum because that's where the multiplayer crowd actually hangs out.
