I've started another Giant 256x128 game, with Miriam and the intent of fungal carpeting all my enemies.  I chose Explore only focus for her.  I was quite surprised when she discovered Secrets of the Human Brain first!  She beat out Zhakarov and 2 Alien factions.  Granted, the Hive was born completely stillborn / dead, and the Spartans badly crippled.  The Pirates are doing fine though, they really don't have any excuse.  Zhakarov is pursuing The Virtual World; I just completed The Weather Paradigm and will soon have The Human Genome Project.

This is a testament to my greatness sheer luck.  And what did I get as my just reward?

The ability to talk to slime mold orifice things that want to kill me.  That I haven't even met yet.  After walking across a continent for 80 years.  Because I've got brains, not boats.  Well at least I'm a little closer to getting The Empath Guild.

Well the content in question was sheer luck.  It is unusual for the worst research faction of the game, to beat the best research faction and others at getting Secrets of the Human Brain.  As for the source, I'm the one who wrote this up.  Is that what you wanted to know?

As someone who plays Miriam and versus Miriam all the time, I have seen this.

If the other factions have pressure either from Miriam herself or constant stalemate wars and she is allowed to ICS and build facilities, that research penalty can be overcome.

But Secrets of the Human Brain is only a Discover 2 tech.  And I don't believe in ICS, I'm a bigpoxer.  I have no idea what was happening to Zhakarov that game.  Probably a random opponents game, so who knows what was crushing him.
