I do change the names of my bases as way to customise my faction. I even add a landmark or two when some significant unnamed feature is present. Also, I put a "+" where my soldiers fell.

No renaming for me.
Everytime someone renames a base, Brian Reynolds cries...

;aki; I'd be interested. Do you have a directory to see the names already taken? As a comprehensive list of every colony names on the Planet would be a precious asset for our Social Research Division, as they are putting in place an Social Psych theory. And AFAIK, our Neurological Department could be interested too ; I think they're currently analyzing tons of data like that in order to understand how the human brain make a decision, such lifting the arm, being angry, dreaming, or deciding a colony name.

You guys, just, you know, putting it out - would you care to unite behind me as the Supreme Leader? What? No, it's not like that, I'm just, just doing a survey, too.

;aki; Aki's log, 2129 - A explorer team, assigned to the discovery of a land full of fungus discovered a unity pod. It looked like one of our lab on the ship! Precious informations may be recovered, so I ordered the team to dive into the fungus to investigate. I know it sounds risky, but those explorers are hardened to the task. They have been in fungus before. The game is worth the candle. Bad call.

The pod was infested by Worms, they have the time to ruin it. A bunch of radar computers was still in good condition despite the crash, but all previous data were corrupted. Nevertheless, the team was able to use the radar to scan the area, and send us some informations. That's when it got weird, and I confess, pretty scary. As we would have predicted, the radar indicates us the presence of worm nests north-east and north-west. They got to get out of here immediately, if they don't want to be caught in a deadly bug sandwich. But images on the screen showed another thing: a vehicule is approching the pod, whereas the worm nests kept their distances.

The vehicule stopped one mile away. They saw us. We saw them. My team send a message to all the radio channel: "Who are you?". No answer, but a sound. A defeaning resonance. After a while, the rover turned around. Our scans did not have the time to identify them clearly. But it was not a nest. And it was not human. I see the images. Not a joke but they really look like... octopus! Frightening octopus, to be precised...

We have to find a way to communicate. Let's bootstrap a language algorithm...

 ;aki; Aki's log, 2130

Aliens worms, and aliens... octopus are still right there. But another exploration team just found a forest. Our arboreal engineer is clear: it's not a natural forest, the ground has been terraformer. Another alien activity? Or maybe human... We're still hoping to find some survivors of the Unity! Maybe they can help us with those aliens threats...

Richard Baxton piloted his Recon Rover into a fungal vortex and held off four waves of mind worms, saving an entire colony. We immediately purchased his identity manifests and repackaged him into the Recon Rover Rick character with a multi-tiered media campaign: televids, touchbooks, holos, psi-tours? the works. People need heroes. They don't need to know how he died clawing his eyes out, screaming for mercy. The real story would just hurt sales, and dampen the spirits of our customers.
