Do any of these need the arrow?  Solid black background, or scanlined?

nope. the last is the most work-intensive one:

scrolling from right to left 'challenge' (SMAC blue color) on the SMACish background with scanlines. the boreder should remain the color of the background for the entire animation.

how's that for a challenge?
