Hrm. What about Europe, the Mid East, India and Africa? Or South/Latin America for that matter?

What were they like in your version?

Also, the Popular front seems to have a lot of bonuses... if they are following Chinese/PRC models of Socialism, they should have problems with efficiency, possibly planet negatives as well. (I honestly see China as more of a nationalist, rather then socialist, power.)

In my version, I follow the SMAC storyline for the most bit. Russian Commonwealth, which is probably a Federalist version of Russia with satellite states, Free Scotland means the UK was split up into multiple nations, Ireland, Scotland and England+Wales being their own nation, which was primarily fascist. Scotland was most likely a representative democracy, and Ireland probably a warzone. The rest of Europe was a mixed bag, but the EU was eventually disbanded and a European alliance took it's place. China follows the crazy storyline of SMAC too, where the nationalist gov't was overtaken by a resurgent monarchist (Remember Yang and him supporting Great China?) and Australia was Communist, but occupied by other powers. India was a democratic republic, basically the same, the United States was divided between the Christian States of America and other segregations, as the Americans slid into despotism, military and religious leaders gaining control as economic conditions degraded. Africa was mostly dominated economically by CEO Morgan, and the Middle East to some extents too. South and Latin America had lots of problems dealing with internal issues and environmental problems, which caused lots of military junta's to rise and fall and some other holdouts, (Santiago had a rough past stemmed in paramilitaries after all) and this was even evident in the United States and Mexico.

And central asia and other parts of Asia was victim to Great China's expansion and interests from other nations.

Overall the world was pretty fractured and unstable.

I tried to glean the geopolitical situation from the SMAC(X) factions site, but can't find remarks about Free Scotland or Australia being a communist state.
But I do remember reading stuff like that. Do you know where I can find it again?

Free Scotland is in  ;deidre; and her background. Background: Free Scotland.

And the Communist Australia was just from BUncle's one short story where one of his characters was born in "The Peoples Republic of Australia."

Not in the profile I'm looking at, in the WayBackMachine.
Same for Miri. No mention of the Christian States of America.

i use star as secondary logo, no hammer and sickle, because like jarl correctly reports, this is not comunism, it's the result of the socialist revolution in asia and indocina. red star is more asian livery.
you'd going to put focus on industry or police?

reading your considerations, i can take in consideration the fact of the disgregation of UK, but the commonwealth of nations is a secular league whose pivot is the britain real home. we can also think about independece of scotland but for the other which form united kingdom i don't.
Canada, australia, new zeland, india and other about 45 minors, remain under the crown because they've the same solid matrix.
There's the concrete possibility commonwealth and united states change their political view to a less democratic structure.
You really think to a religious drift for US or of its southern states?

Your mod, you control history  ;lol

I was going off original SMAC, your going more off an alternate history with it, which is completely fine mind.

Though, keep in mind the Commonwealth of Britain fell from significance by the 1960's: Once India became independent, it tried it's best to distance itself from the UK, at least initially.

Of course, this Commonwealth you speak of could easily just be a second version of it: A refounding if you will that Britain and the other nations undertook to strengthen their ties, perhaps if alliances like NATO or other alliances fell apart and said nations felt threatened.

On the note of the United States, my inference was that the United States fractured into many factions fighting a brutal civil war. I gathered this from both  ;santi;;miriam;, and  ;lal;.

Santiago in her youth was involved in many paramilitaries, among them, some that had fought even near San Francisco and portions of the United States. Her rough background, and the act she is from Puerto Rico if I recall, an American protecterate, if her past is so shaky and from how Earth was at this point, America was probably engulfed in many wars, both external and internal.

The other reason, is Miriam's background. Besides the blatant "Christian States of America" In her background, she was, in her bio/crew dossier described as a charismatic messiah and prophet sort. Originally the Unity actually didn't want her to be on the crew list, but popular demand from the public in these regions and others forced them to allow her to go if I recall. (not saying she was a bad person or whatever, but she was a dangerous fundamentalist who could jeopardize the mission, even if she was a brilliant mind in her own right.)

And the third and final, and perhaps the most haunting reason is from a simple quote by our dear friend Pravrin Lal.

"As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master."

Judging by that, the United States of America felt some sort of tyranny/despotism within their nation. Information was locked down, liberties suppressed, etc. My thoughts on this confirms that SOMETHING happened to the United States, and if you combine Miriam's theocratic ambitions, and Santiago's violent militaristic past it would not be surprising that a nation who, throughout it's history, has often been very polarized in its opinion would fracture under horrible economic and political conditions in a severely unstable world. Military generals ruling as dictators, theological cult leaders like Miriam becoming so large and powerful even a UN project can't deny her authority, and that simple quote lead me to believe that the United States of America was not a single entity anymore.

But to keep the answer short, I think it was only a portion of the United States, probably the South and South East-ish.
