Well, it looks like huge maps are available and 'going wide' is a valid strategy (MadDjinn proved that in one of the saves). So, the usual SMAC builder type of player will have a good challenge on their hands.
From the info available so far, and Firaxis did a great job at promoting it, i'd say the game is worth the 50USD. Of course, if you get a coupon from one of the retailers, it's even better.
