I love the whole SMAX/Fallen Enchantress "hostile world" approach.

Saturday, I will get the demo so I can check for hardware compatibility issues. On paper, my laptop should be able to cope, but the speed of may quad core is slightly lower than the recommended dual core specs though everything else is above spec. Should not be an issue with the exception of humongous maps.

I may even post some screen shots myself of the demo.

Nothing new there; IIRC, the icon for the Computers tech in Civ1 (or maybe it was 2, but I think 1) was from the game itself.
