I hate MMOs
« on: February 25, 2013, 04:02:34 AM »
Does anyone else get tired of developers making more and more MMOS? I mean the economics of those games are ridiculous. Or am I just crazy?

The only one I've even tried was GW2  (GW1 doesn't really count).

You talking about in game economics or the economics of making those games?

Economics of making those games. I mean there is some profit in making the game (or they would not make them), but I feel that its just a rehash of the same old model.

I personally played free to play Startrek, WOW, some cartoon game, and played a little of GW2 (GW2 does not require subscription fees).

Same can be said of most games coming out really.  Look at the FPS genre, 90% of them could be mods of each other.

The economics I don't understand is the PLAYERS these days.  You won't catch me doing microtransactions for a fancy widget in game that you can get eventually by playing, yet that is how the game companies are largely making their money these days.  I don't get it, but whatever.

If I had the programming knowledge I'd make our families' "Double Solitaire" (not the one on a google search, We can't even find the rules in any books, but it had to have come from somewhere.  All I know is the Thornocks have been playing it since before crossing the ocean to the states (at which point they changed their name and we haven't been able to trace family name back across the pond so no idea where it might have come from there, couple theories, most likely German) and put it into one of those "with friends" things.

I think that game developers think that they got a great wealth of history and that they should make MMO with the game.

Examples:
Starwars
Startrek
LOTR
Elder Scrolls.

My issue is they spend great amount of time and money to create a clone of WOW with minor changes. I guess I'm frustrated that developers think the world needs another MMOs because they have a great ip.

I think if there is going to be MMO's, make them much more simple and not so real time based. Especially for tactical ones. I haven't played too many personally, but I think the "real" time grinding and irritating construction times are boring. You have games like minecraft that are successful because the servers it has offers lots of freedom and a sandbox environment without irritating payments or waiting times for producing things.

The righteous need not cower before the drumbeat of human progress. Though the song of yesterday fades into the challenge of tomorrow, God still watches and judges us. Evil lurks in the datalinks as it lurked in the streets of yesteryear. But it was never the streets that were evil.
