Okay, updated all, other than some Aki. My feeling about Aki's base names is that the absolute lack of personality in the base names is important to her persona. Pure rational thought with emotions removed could lead to having bases which are simply numbered, or follow a very structured pattern, rather than more descriptive or meaningful names. I'm not massively keen on altering or deviating from existing patterns with base names, though I could be persuaded.

Great work everyone, I think we have enough land bases for everyone now (though more are still welcome if you feel inspired). Most factions could do with a few more sea base names though.
Morgan, Hive, PKs, Angels: None
Gaians: One
Zak, Sparta, Miriam, Aki, Cult, Usurpers, Caretakers: Some, a few more would be nice.
Drones: A fair number, more would not hurt

And the Pirates need sorting into sea and land basenames.

You used the Hebrew alphabet Cyborg names, but blew off the Arabic alphabet ones; problem with the special characters?  They work in Notepad...

As I said in my update post wanted to talk over Aki basename styles before doing much, I planned to revisit them once there's been a bit of debate. Also, I was not totally sure if the special characters would work (they probably will), and thought that lowercase-first basenames may feel a bit odd. I'll add them now, but what do you think about the lowercase basenames looking odd thing?

And which post is that? I do intend to run through the thread again before finalizing anything, so missed things should be caught at some point, but better get them sooner. Also, feel free to update the pad directly if you like.

I'm all for capitalizing the Arabic - I just don't know how.  One of them begins with a special character.  I compile all my lists in Notepad before pasting them here, so I know they work there, if not the game - someone will have to test.

(With "Sector" appended, of course, the Hebrew and Arabic letters would be good for that many more generic names...)

On a second pass, I found the Drone names I missed the first time; never mind about that.  :-[

I'm not sure it matters which bases go under sea for the Pirates; they're a special case.

I'll try to see what I can come up with for sea bases for the others - sea bases sorta make my brain hurt...

I used Mediawiki's ucfirst magic word plus the alphebetizer (http://alphabetizer.flap.tv/ ) to capitalize them and switched to caps ones.

By coincidence the Cyborg faction is my "quick start" faction for testing features of a mod I'm working on, and I must say I'm rather surprised at the kind of basenames that pop up now and then.

Alright folks, there’s a problem with some of the current base names (besides the majority being god‐awful abominations not to my taste, that is :P); namely that all the text files (for the English version at least¹) are encoded for the Windows‐1252 codepage

That means that anything in a different encoding will either print the incorrect character (if it is an 8‐bit encoding) or multiple incorrect characters (if it is saved in any Unicode format), and in both cases you’ll be getting something other than what you want.³ You’ll want to save in the “ANSI” encoding, if you’re using notepad. If you’ve got a proper text editor, odds are you already know what you’re doing or that your text editor automatically detects the correct encoding. Either way, if you paste something in, go to save, and it comes up with an error box about “This file contains characters in unicode format…” don’t save it — delete the Unicode text first, then try again.

tl;dr: Plain‐text, Latin alphabet only, “ANSI” encoding, final destination.


1. French and German are also encoded in Windows‐1252, so unless Firaxis inexplicably decided to change the way they wrote SMAC/X once they got done with English — possible, but implausible — then those versions are operating under the same assumptions and limitations as that of the English version. I’m all‐but certain that Spanish can also be written using this legacy encoding, but don’t quote me on that.

2. A.K.A. “Windows: Western European”, erroneously referred to as “ANSI” by Windows, and so often erroneously referred to as ISO‐8859‐1 by everyone that they built into HTML5 the assumption that people would get it wrong — a HTML5 compliant browser must compensate for this, HTML4 compliant browsers don’t have to. (This common mistake is where the whole ‘smart quotes not working on non‐Windows platforms’ came from, BTW.)

3. This phenomenon is commonly known as mojibake.

Right now? Only them that I know of, but it is something to keep in mind for anyone who is thinking of using any exotic glyphs. (You’re not the only person that tripped it up — I discovered this issue for myself when trying to use correctly accented Latin, then remembered this thread.)

Any suggestions for a workaround?  Does anyone around here know enough to tell us if the Arabic alphabet names transliterated w/o the special characters would or would not be gibberish?
