Derp moments in Alpha Centauri
« on: October 05, 2015, 03:00:37 PM »
Whats the stupidest thing you've done in Alpha Centauri? Just those little face palm moments when you realized you did something dumb? For instance forgetting the "terraform level" command.

Happened a lot at various levels, but I cannot grade them. It depends on a specific case.
I had similar, planned a base on a jungle tile only to find out with colony pod, that it is rocky terrain... didn't check it earlier.
Planned an attack from a sea transport, with infantry, that was supposed to be loaded onto it without loosing its only (infantry) move point. Unfortunately, it wasn't, so I had only option to loose that move point and not attack the very same turn.
I didn't check, if automatic monolith upgrade is turned off. And my unit (was it probe team?, but I had that more than once) did not reach its destination, and made a stop on monolith tile.

Mostly it is forgetting to upgrade or add more defenders in older, non frontline cities and just build, build, build.. That poor scout patrol at New Jerusalem never saw the stack of AntiMind mind worms coming.

Ouch. Been there actually. My main defense is usually the zillions of Rovers and aircraft I usually have.

Just sent a colony pod on a long range journey (mostly over rivers) to a very good advanced position, only to have it destroyed halfway by a sneak attack by worms from a bordering fungus square.

Hallo, by the way, I am a new recruit to SMAC.

Recent one: had conquered seabase from Antimind and granted it to my pactmate Zak. Planned to use it as the forward airbase. Antimind refugees' escape pod had fled to adjacent island and vanished in fungus. Instead of letting them leave, I moved chopper (upgraded Unity chopper, independent) into the base to hunt it down - and BLAM! the chopper and the base have been obliterated by Hminee's XXX missile!

Trying to make friends with everyone is one of my classic mistakes. Typically what happens when I try that is
I end up hated by everyone. Sure why not just sign that treaty with the Spartans and their enemies the Believers
and their enemies the Gaians. What could possibly go wrong? "Uhh sir. Half of the factions on Planet just declared
war on us." Sigh.....

Pound the ones who declare war on you first, and then you won't be trying to make friends with everyone anymore.

True, but I like to try and be nice first. Then you get Miriam who apparently has nothing to do but knit and form military units.
One time she declares on me becasue why not and sure I go and get together a military force to invade her Island continent.
What go wrong? How many units could she possibly have? I get there and its a scene out The Two Towers when Saruman was
mustering his Uruk-hai. She had stacks of 5 just on patrol. Get a hobby woman.

True...

But most of the time if you have Miriam next to you, you are eventually going to have to go to war with her. It is like playing Civ 4 and playing next to Montezuma.

Spreading "dissent" IS her hobby. She even has stock in Hobby Lobby.

One game, I thought I was safe. Her formers actually raised ground to get me across a channel!

She actually makes a great ally if you can sway her.

Really? I didn't even know the AI was smart enough to do that.

I actually have proof in screenshots.

Somewhere on here, I have an AAR I did with Lal. I believe it was AAR 1. Miriam spanked me by doing exactly that. Nasty, too. I was using chemical weapons to try to keep her off me, but her support was just too much.

Oh I believe you. Its just i've never seen it happen. Fighting Miriam can be a massive pain.
Once she runs out of units in the pantry she actually folds pretty fast.
Sometimes its just better to buy her off until you can get your revenge or just ally with
her over everyone else. The Hive is just as bad in a way if not worse just because he
churns out units like he has a conveyor belt or something. The Drones on paper should
be very powerful but it never seems to materialize.

Once thought I could carry planet busters on boats for surprise nuking, but it just ran out of fuel near boat, and it considered it detonation. Killed an entire city and ship.

Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden. He drove out the man, and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.
