What other games do people play here?
« on: September 20, 2015, 08:56:17 AM »
I was just curious what other games people play here.
Yes Alpha Centauri is probably the best 4X game of all time but surely people play other games.
Me I'm a fan of open world games like Skyrim and especially Fallout.
I'm a Fallout junkie the only thing keeping me from playing it constantly
is Fallout 3 is very unstable on my PC.

FTL: Faster Than Light, an indie roguelike space game, has occupied probably 99.9% of my gaming time since I bought it in Feb '13.

I recently discovered, looking at my Newegg history, that it's been 5 yrs (! - because life) since I've upgraded my PC (other than Win7 & SSD), so I haven't played anything else new or recent. (Just bought some more RAM, but my PC doesn't like it, so I'll have to try a different brand - weird, since I've never had a problem with Kingston before.)

SMAX used to be my most played, with occasional Civ 4 BTS. Some Torchlight 1 (never got around to finishing, though; Diablo II; a little Doom, with the fanmade front end; Deus Ex GOTY, System Shock 2. Some forays into games I got from GOG: Baldur's Gate 1, Fallout 1 (not 2, though I have it), MOO1 (I also have 2, but haven't fired that up much), Colonization. I also have MOM, which was a favorite back in the day, but haven't played much of that either.

Sigh. Just don't have the time to play games like I used to. "Reality is a rotten place to be."

I go almost all the way back with SMACX, of course, picking it up cheap late the year of release.  Other than that, I've played a lot of CivII.  Lots of Age of Empires, and AOE2, which I might like as much as SMACX if they were turn-based; RT can get really stressful for something you do to chill out.

I used to play TBS and RTS demos all the time in the late 90s when my sister was subscribed to Computer Games+, which included a monthly CD, usually full of demos.  It's how I was introduced to SMACX, of course - I played that demo so much I was dreaming I was playing.

I dabble mostly. Really have trouble finding time to sit down more than an hour at a time.

But, when I do play it tends to be TBS stuff. I had a bad Age of Wonders 3 kick a while back.

Was addicted to a few MMOs like World of Warcraft then the deeper Eve Online years back. But, those games are almost like jobs and have very monotonous stretches to them. And, most MMOs are expensive in the long run. While I love reading about them, I have no real desire to return to them. MMOs are for students, house wives/husbands, the unemployed, retired, and IT directors that can play at work.

I enjoyed AOE/ROR a lot back in the day, more than AOE2. Some friends (before families) & I had a LAN at one friend's or another's house, and we'd play coop or 2v2. When I was relatively new, not having cleared the fog of war and hearing "wololo" and losing a unit was some scary stuff. Eventually I learned that was an enemy priest, and that chariot archers made mincemeat of them. Didn't build walls either, like in the later games: just 4 towers around the town center, and others near resources. One of the problems with the early versions was that workers would just stop when the resource ran out, rather than find a new source, so the "idle worker" hotkey was an important micromanagement tool.

I enjoyed Age of Mythology more than the later ones, too. Generating favor was an interesting resource addition. I liked playing the Norse, as fighting was one of their ways to gain favor, and it got me out of my builder shell.

I like to play Left 4 dead 2 with my friends. I'm actually good with the tank. I love making a monkey out of people
with him. The only MMO I play now is The Secret World. Its a well written game in a modern setting where myths and magic are real. Templars for life. Shoulders back and fear no darkness.

I tend to play older games that don't take a Master's Degree and Lightning Reflexes. Space Empires IV is on my frequent-play list. There is a Space Empires V which is an enhanced 3D version of SEIV with updated AI and more options, but I didn't like it. I'd give it away if somebody wanted it.
I also play tabletop wargames, including Ambush!, Patton's Best, and Flashpoint: Golan.

Diablo II was the big one for me back in the day.

These days, mostly Dominions 4 and Kerbal Space Program on the PC and whatever I can play with the kids on the Playstation.

occasionally will boot up Guild Wars.  It sucks me in for a month or so when I'm bored once or twice a year.

I'm fairly decent at shooters on the console, but they hurt my hands if I play for long.  So, while I enjoy the likes of Fallout, Uncharted, Mass Effect, etc on consoles, I can't play for long sessions.  Was decently well known at Mass Effect 3 multiplayer none the less, able to clear levels solo when needed (cause everyone else died) at the highest difficulties.

Been known to open a can of whoop ass on insert fighting game here.  I've NEVER practiced them, and honestly don't care much about them, just have some kind of innate understanding of how they work going back to street fighter 2 arcade days.  First time I touched that I trounced a bunch of older kids that knew all the hidden moves and crap.  School the boys when they think they are good at the few we have on the playstation.

I think one of the cool things that always has me coming back to the AC 2 community is exactly the attitude about games in the above posts. We play games, but they are NOT a life mission.

It tires me on other gaming boards the whole "pro" attitude. But, gaming is for nerds like golf is to upper middle class. Everyone plays golf. Yes, some people make a living off of golf. Very few of them actual players. But, unlike golf, League of Legends and other "E-sports" do not have millions of dollars in ad revenue. Also, golf does not become irrelevant because golf is old. Also, being successful in golf is relative. One guy in the country club may be the master of that one particular course because he played it 3 days a week for 20 years. But, get him on a different course, he is mediocre and the only ones who want to see him play are the people selling him merchandise and golf trips. Same with video games that come and go out of favor. The shops make money, the company does, but only the top .01 percent get to make a living and it is usually in teaching, merchandise, and commentary.

With those odds, I never for the life of me understood a lot of unwarranted self importance that surrounds gaming communities. So what your guild is rank #67 worldwide. It means nothing. That game will be out of favor, but I am sure the company loves your promotion and spend a wad at conventions to try to prove your "leetness". Not that there is anything wrong with that, but gaming always has had that delusional edge to it in many circles as opposed to just a hobby. That is, until life sets in.

A lot of people go that route with whatever their hobby is.

People get their competitive spirit up over the dumbest things.  Golf, you mention.  My Brother may as well just open a Cabelas store in his garage for his camping gear.  I know many Halloween folk that judge displays by the $ spent.

More power to them.

The thing I don't get that's exploded lately is the "pay to win" format, or much less the "energy" trap in "free" games.  Somewhere people are making a lot of money, which means a lot of people are spending lots on these things, and I just don't understand that at all.

Indeed. My daughter's bf is like that. He comes over here to visit then does nothing but play WoW down in the common area, ignoring her. My daughter plays WoW occasionally, too. But not for 8 hours. Game gets too monotonous for that. I keep my mouth shut, but I am like damn dude. You are at your gf's house. Put the damn laptop down, LOL!

And he has all these visions of League of Legends groups and being a leet guild in WoW. I feel sorry for him. He beats some of my daughter's previous bfs, but she is going to get tired of it and drop him.

Kids....

FYI, GOG now has System Shock: Enhanced Edition. It has "higher" resolution support - up to 1024x768 or 854x480 widescreen - mouselook, remappable keys, & some (unspecified) bug fixes.
