Tidal waves wreck base.
« on: March 09, 2015, 03:48:02 PM »
Well. This is a new one.

No idea that was possible.

It did not only wipe out a base, it also wiped out a lot of terraforming, and a dozen of terraformers in an unlucky spot. [intercourse]...

The event created a large river and a few new sea spots.

Was it global warming?
Global warming is part of the game, which you can also influence with council - there are 2 such votings.

Nope, it was a random event. I have turned down global warming in the alphax.txt.

Also, I had no ecodamage on most of my bases. And only 2 or 3 on a few. Had not had any global warming warnings.

I didn't have any tidal harnesses or mining bases in the seas. Perhaps the event does something else when it cannot find bases to destroy.

New sea spots and a river as a result of a random event?  That doesn't seem to be on the list...do you have a save from shortly beforehand, and if so, if you load the game and do the same things does it happen again?

I don't have a recent save. But will try and see if it happens again if I replay up to that year. (Just quickly ending turns up to the point it happened did not work).

I do have some before and after shots.

Tidal wave!

So it seems it also swept away the crawlers and a lot of population on the affected bases.

(Hole of aspiration and the great collective dropped from 6 and 5 population to 2 and 1).

I wonder if it's somehow related to the volcano random event, but changed somehow due to the high base density...

Those results (rivers, water, lost crawlers and formers, lost population) are normal for a global warming result, even if you have no ecodamage. Some of the other factions may be creating ecodamage and triggering sea rises.

I reduced global warming by 1000. So for some reason it seems unlikely I was dealing with ecodamage. But perhaps the high amount of bases I had with the some ecodamage (looking around I had a few bases with 3-4 ecodamage) caused it. Feels unlikely to me. But not really up to date on how easy it is to hit those thresholds.

From my alphax.txt:
1, 1000     ; Numerator/Denominator for frequency of global warming (1,2 would be "half" normal warming). {0 to 32767, 1 to 32767}

You know, if you want to eliminate global warming entirely, setting it to 0,1 should do that.

I usually play with 7,4. Imagine the mess that makes.

And what ecodamage values?

Default. I hesitate to mess with those: after seeing what the 7,4 global warming does, and not understanding the ecodamage stuff very well. Definitely a project for another game, though.
