Those artists are not the hard-labouring, simple-task executing, crew of the ship. They're the colonists. If that's the kind of colony Élodie wants, that's what she'll get.
Besides, have you never read Dan Simmons' Hyperion? With King Billy's colony of artists on a frontier world?
