A (possible?) bug report.

Overall:
the GOG SMAX 2.0 version with only Scient's unofficial .exe (v1.0 for all I can see) added.

Game situation:
Started as the Believers on the normal Map of Planet (SMAX MoP).
Usually the player faction starts near the Freshwater Sea and has good dibs on the goodies of the Unity wreckage, and I managed to get faction locations, the chopper, and the mining laser.
At MY 2141 my chopper met a Drone colony pod, but no diplomatic contact screen popped up. Then I tried several things:
  • Attempting to move the chopper on the pod results in an automatic vendetta declaration, but the chopper didn't attack the pod. Contact info was established then and I could settle a truce.
  • After spotting the pod with my chopper I moved away from it, no contact was established at all. But a few turns later a scout of mine stumbled upon the Drone base this pod had established and contact was made.

I attached the autosave below of the turn I spotted the colony pod. if people want to check for themself, move the chopper a couple tiles to the right, and see what happens.

Some other remarks:
  • When setting up the game, I changed name and gender of the leader. The changes were placed in the game, but I couldn't see the change 'stick' in the setup stage. My leader was still female after pressing okay in the leader setup screen.
  • There's no "Energy Core" pod in the Unity Wreckage. I remember the normal version didn't have that either (probably for balance reasons since it gives a good amount of ec's), but wonder if the game could be changed so this pod is put there when a game starts. I know a modder can manually place the pod there on a self-made map, that's not the problem, but I'd like it to be there as well in a normal game.

I think it's something to do with air units not initiating contact.  Ground or sea units you get contact right away but needlejets or copters, it wouldn't initiate it.

Planet's atmosphere, though a gasping death to humans and most animals, is paradise for Earth plants. The high nitrate content of the soil and the rich yellow sunlight bring an abundant harvest wherever adjustments can be made for the unusual soil conditions.
