Using Patrol, you can instantly level up your mindworms to Demon Boils!  A little later on, the implication is that the Patrol trick can work for any unit.

Later on he also demonstrates how any unit can have an artillery attack, if you start an attack with a proper artillery unit and then just change units.

The artillery one is new by me - but you didn't know about the patrol bug?  TOTALLY works for any unit.

Most of my history with the game has been antisocial.  Even in Seattle, broadband wasn't exactly a widespread thing when it came out.  Well actually I don't know if it needed more than a 56k dialup modem or not.  Even with PBEM, the game was so damn long that I had a hard time imagining or getting motivated to play it with anyone else.  I did do some LAN play once with a neighbor, that's about it.  Never got any other takers so that was that.  Oddly uninterested in discussing the game with anyone back then either.  I talked about plenty of things on the Usenet newsgroups, but I don't remember there being any SMAC group.

The patrol bug I fixed in one of the iterations of my patch. You're actually corrupting the unit memory structure when you do it writing coordinates into the morale field. Then the game normalizes the value to max (elite/demon boil).
