For an SMAX spiritual successor, they got the early game native threat right and expanded on it. Only Fallen Enchantress gets the whole "hostile world" thing right.

However, Pandora's weakness is that AC was not a pure wargame for mid game. It was a diplo game as well. In fact, SMAC is only an adequate war game if you see it with only that part.
