Title: Looking for a new game
Post by: Kirov on November 05, 2012, 04:44:00 PM
Hello everyone, I'm looking for a CMN and 3 players for a new game. I'm open to setting suggestions, but I'm considering banning crawlers and choppers from the game. Would anyone be interested in that?

SMAX of course.

Alternatively, I can take up a replacement if needed.

One more thing I should perhaps add: I'd rather ban all the exploits in the game, together with stockpiling and reverse engineering. But maybe it's just me, you can convince me otherwise.

You've got  a CMN, Ill create the scenario. Now lets look for players.

t_ras, it's been so long, hello my friend!:) And look at you: your avatar's changed, you're both a CMN and moderator now... Clearly, time is on your side. ;P Thanks for CMNing, mate!

Would you be interested in a 2 vs 2 game where we each play two teamed factions?  I am good with all your restrictions except crawlers.

I think the stockpiling exploit is usually banned by standard multiplayer rules?

I can live with banning reverse engineering.

I would prefer to ban attrocities, but that is not a game breaker if you want them on this kind of game, as long as no one is playing pirates.

UPDATE: I don't recommend the ban on crawlers and choppers anymore, they're free to take. :) However, I'd be somewhat insisty on banning EG from the game and I would put a ban on CBA under voting. I say 'yes', but I may be persuaded otherwise.

Earthmichael, I replied to you in that other thread, but would you care to join this game if we discuss the rules again?
Title: Re: Looking for a new game
Post by: Earthmichael on November 09, 2012, 12:58:59 AM
I guess I can join, but I would prefer a 2 player game.  I am getting tired of the slow pace of the 4 players games I am currently in.  My 2 player game with t_ras is like a breath of fresh air!

I would still like to keep the ban on choppers, and I am OK with the ban on EG and CBA.  I would also like to ban attrocities, because I am sick of games where I am constantly battling rising water.  The water still might rise due to ecodamage, but nothing like with attrocities.  After a certain point, Planet just goes nuts.

If it is fine for you both I could prepare one for you. just state your factions.

Let's wait a couple of days for other players, the more the merrier.

And Earthmichael, I'm afraid I can't offer you your expected turn capacity. :( RL watches and judges.

You have to judge when you are maxed out, I don't want to push.   I would like to play 1 on 1 with you sometime, even if we just do a couple of turns a week.

Sorry, Kirov. It seems all players have there hands full right now, you could try  jarlWolf or Gusanin, I think they have only one game going on.

Funbot,

If you are interested in a 1-v-1 game with me, I am up for that.  My preferred game is 2 faction vs 2 faction (no AI) on the balanced Vets map (where each of us takes 2 factions of our choice).  If you are interested, you get first choice of factions, and your factions go first.  My only restriciton is that you cannot take BOTH University and CyCon.

I can be talked into some other kind of 1-v-1 (with or without AI factions) if you do not like that format, but I do want to play on a balanced map.

Let me know if this interests you.  If you want more than 2 players, I am sure that some of the other players will be happy to join you, but I already have enough of the 4+ player games going myself.

Phew, playing 2 faction at same time? Idk, that seems so diffrent gamestyle i've used to play that i dont think i can get my head around with that lawl. And yeh, since im actually atm playing 1vs1 with friend of mine, i think i would want to have bit bigger game this time :P

Well anyway, heres my preferrences on any alpha game:

Map full random

on default 7 faction game standard size map

Transcend difficulty

all winning options

techstagnation

No spoils of war

No blind research

World map not visible and supply pods only at landing site

Aaand i prefer play as miriam, but i doubt theres much of competition there ;).

And as always, i always rdy to bend with my preferences :)

Funbot, just I couple of days ago I was thinking that the Believers is actually the most mysterious faction to me, and I played them as much as I played the aliens (i.e. once). I'd love to see you play it and take some notes in the process! I wonder what is the best way to work around that research hit of theirs...

Great, so we have a game then, and t_ras will CMN it.

Welcome aboard, fellas!

As to house rules - I usually want to ban EG, but the more I read the discussion with Earthmichael and Yitzi, the more I'm concerned about air power. What do you say, guys? I'm thinking that CBA is too strong, let's maybe ban it or double its price, and I would have a house rule to either ban copters or forbid them attacking base tiles (I played with this setting and it worked ok). But the most important thing for me is to play, so if you're uncomfortable with any changes, I can go for vanilla SMAX, no problem.

Map size: medium or large?

Either way, I'm considering either Morgan or Lal, probably Morgan. Dolgorukov, any faction preferences?

It's great we can get this thing going!

I'd say ban CBA and allow copters but restrict them to not attack basetile. Map size i would prefer as standard, specificly if theres just three of us playing.

And EG.. for that i dont have really strong opinions atm so I leave it for you guys to decide :)

Well there's a reason why the Spartan Battle manual declares that Air power rests at the apex of the triad of victory... I say let's go Vanilla SMAX for the most part, except that copters are not allowed to be armed with weapons more powerful than "hand weapons."

As for AI, yes fill up the remaining spots with AI!

I'll take University  ;zak;

Map full random OK

on default 7 faction game standard size map OK

Transcend difficulty OK

all winning options ok

techstagnation Nay

No spoils of war ok

No blind research ok

World map not visible nay

supply pods only at landing site nay

So compters cant atack cities and are allowed only "hand weapons"? (I think you should explain exactly what "hand weapons" is)

I think it either/or, and I'm willing to try the low weapon option (I've never played it), although maybe we could up this to weapon 2. Otherwise choppers will have a hard time even killing formers (i.e. it will work effectively as a ban on choppers).

As for the settings - I'm fine with them, except I hope t_ras will help us create a map which is at least not totally random, and I'm also thinking about leaving the Spoils of War on (to give some help to the Believers faction, which in my personal opinion is weaker than both Zak and Morgan). Funbot, what do you think?

Could you be specific Which settings you are fine with, mine or Dolgus? (diffrences are at tech stagnation, world map visible and supply pods scattered all around)

Anyway, i always though Spoils of war is rather op option for aggressive factions, so i never liked it on my games. I'd say just give it a go without it, and if it doesnt work factionwise, i will consider changing my factionpreferrence for the future PBEM mathces  ;lol

-edit- And yeh, the copters, do as u guys wish, i will adapt to which ever decision you guys end with :)

OK, the settings which I believe we can agree on, I mixed suggestions of both of you and introduced mine:

game: SMAX
map size: standard
map type: balanced by CMN t_ras
ocean, native life, humidity and rockiness: as defined by CMN, but close to average
difficulty: transcend
victory conditions: all on (I think except the cooperative victory, as it would be too easy to ally for two players and get rid of the third one)
do or die: on
look first: up to what CMN cooks for us
techstagnation: off
spoils of war: off
blind research: off
intense rivalry: off
no unity survey: on
no unity scattering: on
bell curve: on
random faction leaders: off

House rules: I personally believe that reverse engineering and crawler upgrading are exploits, so I'd rather do away with them. Stockpile energy exploit may stay (just remind me to do that, I always keep forgetting that ;)).

Special rule: choppers may be equipped only with A1 or A2.

If you're OK with the above, we can talk to t_ras about the game already. :)  ;b;

EDIT for typos.

I like what Kirov has proposed but would not deny the option to exercise these exploits (reverse engineering, crawler upgrading). Sure it's unfair to the poor dumb AI but hey, this particular game is about human competition, and the playing field among humans remains the same.

What about turn pushing rules? How many days before a CMN pushes a turn for an inactive player? I propose 3 days. Pushing a turn means ending it with minimum action by CMN.

Well i havent really used any exploits that are mentioned here ingame, sooo im pretty sure im gonna forget them when i make my turn in our game.. Soo yeh, just ban em for all i care.

3 days for pushing the button: im okay with this.

Dolgorukov, I'm not saying these exploits are all powerful or something, I just strongly believe that they run counter to the designers' intentions (if it was otherwise, these features would be accessible in a more obvious way).

t_ras, we're fine with those game setting, I think you can start fixing us with a map.

To recap factions:
Dolgorukov - Zak
funbot - Miriam
Kirov - Morgan

We play with AI, choices are up to t_ras.

So I get to watch Zak and Miriam in one game... I'm gonna enjoy this. :)

Very well then, let's agree to:

1) never use reverse engineering outside the intended scope of the feature: (You may still reverse engineer using captured enemy units);
2) never upgrade supply units (crawlers, trawlers) <--- this kind of sucks, imagine if you want to put some kind of armour+worm defence via upgrading on all those crawlers you produced early on in the game... Can't do it now!  :attn:

I'm confused here. I actually wanted to ban reverse engineering captured units. So what in your opinion is intended and unintended scope? Intended is for captured units, unintended is for reverse engineering probe teams for rovers?

Either way, ok, I can agree.

Well, to be honest I just wanted to ban crawler upgrading for SP instabuild reasons. I guess I could OK upgrading field units, provided we promise we don't exploit this. :)

The AI are :
Pirates
Drones
Cult
Data Angels
Every one gets 3 escape pods, 3 gun foils, 1 unity foil, Doctrine Flexibility.
The AI wher very lightly boosted (just one more pod and one more unit)

So to recap:
reverse engineering captured units and crawler-upgrading are okay, but make sure to take your upgraded crawler for a few laps around the block before donating it to your local Secret Project fundraiser.
