Title: Comments on War Crimes: Operation Slapdash
Post by: Buster's Uncle on November 04, 2012, 04:10:33 AM
Check out the story here (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2553.0) and let us know what you think.  I'm mostly posting this because Rym's fantastic Warcrimes II was a sort of sequel - telling the story from the other side, working toward a different ending, as both stories were written for separate GotMs that did the same.  The two stories are still companion pieces, addressing both sides of the issue fairly for their respective factions.

I was terribly blocked when I had to write this, which is the reason that it's more of an introduction to the GotM than a complete story.  I just couldn't think of an ending that said anything worth saying.  Gomez follows Santos through the fall of the last Gaian base; so what?

However, I think what I did write works, and the incorporation of art as part of the story really works, too.  Additionally, part five, slim as it is, has never been published before anywhere.  Hope our humble efforts meet with your approval, and entertained you for a while.   Don't neglect to read  Rym's story War Crimes: Gaians at War (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=2546.0)  too.

It sure inspired me to write the sequel and it's a great intro! I find it hard to write action-packed stories, but you succeeded.

I remember reading both of these, nice little insights on the factions, though im surprised the Gaians are still using old Earth technology broadcast equipment when its mentioned they have hologram theaters: Wouldn't it make sense for this state broadcast to be with the high tech as well?

(Not a criticism, just curiosity :P)

Are you talking about Warcrimes II?  It's the one that opens in a TV studio.

Mhm. I liked the stories of them both mind, I think they were both pretty fitting as well. And it was a pretty nasty ending for Dieter. Plus I've always wondered how mindworm control actually works, this gives me some of an idea.

Well, tech is not set at a very high level in the scenario, if I recall...

Probably the early years of Planet Fall? I am guessing maybe 20 to 30 years after Planet Fall, as there would need to be time for a generation to develop in the new communities. One of the characters states his family is from a certain Chiron based community, not from Earth.

Yeah; they'd had a little time to get established and spread out, but were not yet anywhere near the magtubes and antigrav tech stage.

I think that the idea was to show how the Gaians would re-use old equipment as much as possible, them being environmentalists, etc. And even hologram recording would use cables and other generic stuff. Not sure how well it worked, though.  :)
