This is the turn tracking thread for the Earthmichael vs t_ras challenge play-by-email (PBEM)

Important notes:
1. Additional game rules - see first post here: http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1519.0 (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1519.0)
2. The expected turn rate is 1 turn every 24 hours. Out-of-town and vacation periods must be announced in this thread - the game will be stalled during these periods.
3. There are no AIs. All factions start with 2 colony pods, 4 scouts and 2 formers.
4. You have the commlinks of both factions you control.
5. Attrocities are banned.  If the UN Charter is repealed by council vote, then of course attrocities are permitted.

t_ras, if it is acceptable to you, I would like to have two extra rules in place, just as I had with the similar game earlier:

1. I would prefer to ban attrocities.  Normally, these are balanced with computer player anomosity, but with no computer players, attrocities are only balanced by the single faction that we have trade with.  But remember with attrocities banned, you cannot even nerve staple.  So think carefully before you agree.  If you want to allow attrocities, I will go with that, but I know from past experience that attrocities will be used freely and often if allowed.

2. I would perfer to ban copters.  I don't feel too strongly about this, if you want to use them, but I think that are way too powerful because of how many times they can attack in a single turn.  Contrast that with Needlejets which can only attack once, and cannot move after attacking.

Are either or both of these acceptable to you?  I am OK if they are not, since we did not clarify before the setup, but I think it makes for a more strategic game.  Otherwise, copters just rule after you get them, and attrocities will be used freely. 

Are there any other rules you would like to have in the game?   If so, we should set them now before either of us make our first move.

I think rule 1 is good. Rule 2 might be in my faber, since I'm the weeker player, but still I would rather keep the chopers.

My game crashes when I attempt to load the save file provided by t_ras.  I am not even given a chance to enter the password.

Can someone else see if they can open this save file, or if it is just my computer?

Just for reference, I CAN open the original file posted by Sisko.  I don't know the password for University, but I can at least get to the point where it askes for the password.  But when I open the file posted by t_ras, it crashes before the game can ask for a password.

The resend does not crash, but I get "Error reading file".  Perhaps you need to completely replay the turn or something.  I have had no problem with your previous.2149 file.
 
Try posting the file on our thread, and I will see if I have any better luck.  Otherwise, I am not sure what to do.

Just FYI, but I still do not have a useable turn.  I realize you are having computer problems, but I just wanted to let you know that I have not been able to load either of the two files for this turn.

I will be leaving on a cruise Sunday morning, and will be gone until the next Sunday.  I will have no internet access for that week (poor me  ;) ).

I will be sure to play any turn that arrives by Sunday morning before I go.

I am posting the file below.  Can anyone who is viewing this thread download the file and see if their SMAX can read it?  It you get to the part where it asks for a password, you are getting further than me.  Please post your results so we can see what is going on.  Thanks!

I had to boot up my scientIffic install and navigate over to the version where I saved it to get the save to even show up on the list, but I, too, got an "Error loading file" message.

All of your previous turns have worked fine.  Is there anything different about how you played or are sending this one?

Otherwise, I would say play the turn completely over again, and post the result here (in case the email is causing problems).

I have determined what is causing the crashes.  During the Free Drones turn, if I move my cursor onto squares (65,5) or (66,4) in any way, whether directly clicking, or moving by arrow keys, the game crashes.

I loaded turn 2166, and this does not happen.

The main thing that happened in between is that we have a water rising event triggered on turn 2167.

Does anyone know how to debug this?  Is there any way to edit the save so that this does not happen?  Will replaying from 2166 do any good, or is the bug likely to happen anyway?

This bug happens every now and then. As far as I remeber, there's nothing to do. I hope this fixed it self next turn.

Thanks for the resend, but after thinking about this a bit, I would like to try to replay from 2166, and see if the bug still occurs (unless someone chimes in that they know how to fix this.)

If it does still occur, we will just press on anyway.

I will do the replay of 2166 in the next couple of hours, so you can look for it then.

I hate this happened to our game; I have only seen this bug one other time, and it was a pain in the rear the rest of the game.

OK, I am stilling working on trying to figure this out.  Here is what I know:

1. If on turn 2166, I do NOTHING as Aki, just end turn, then the bug does not show up on the Drones.

2. If on turn 2166, I play Aki with what I would normally do, the bug does show up on the Drones.

I am now trying to figure out what action I am taking as Aki that triggers the bug on the Drones.  This could take awhile.  Sorry.  And it is now 10:30 my time, so time to go to bed for now.  I will work on this more tomorrow.

Also, expect a LOT of reloads, as I try different things to see if I can figure out what triggers the bug.

I figured out that saving and loading as the Drones also triggers the bug.  If I end turn as Aki, log in as Drones, and check, the squares are not bugged.  But if I save and load, and check, the squares are now bugged.  So somehow the save and reload process triggers the bug!

So a lot of the experimentation, where I thought I was verifying things were safe, was not actually doing that at all.  I have to go through a Drone save and reload step each time to see if the bug is there or not.

I am too bummed to try any more tonight.  I will take another look at it tomorrow.

I wonder if there is some kind of save file editor I could run the save file through that might potentially clean up the bug?

I had one last idea to try, and it seems to have worked!

I noticed the two crashing squares were both solar collectors adjacent to the same Echelon Mirror.  I destroyed my Echelon Mirror, and it seems to have eliminated the bug! 

Has anyone else noticed an Echelon Mirror crashing their game?  I know I have used them successfully many, many times, so there must be something special about this placement that triggers the crash.

In fact, I have had this Escelon Mirror for at least 20 turns, so I have no idea why it now decided to crash.  But at least I have (hopefully) found the source of the crash and can continue.

The mirror is doomed.  I figured out that doing nothing just delays the inevitable.  As soon as I do anything, the bug is waiting to crash me.

If you do not mind the experimentation time, at some later turn, I could try to rebuild the mirror and see if it still crashes me.  But lets play a few turns first.

Be sure and let me know of any probe team actions/messages that occur, because one of the bugs of multiplayer games is that the affected faction does not get the probe team message.

The reason I am asking is that I saw that the Free Drones have Vendetta with Hive, but to my knowledge, Free Drones have not come into contact with Hive.  So I assuming that there was a hostile probe team action, but I did not get the message.

The reason I am assuming this is that normally I do get combat messages, but I did not get such a combat message.  If indeed Hive had combat with Free Drones, please let me know that too, because I should be notified of any combat.

I noticed a LOT of rising water.  The cities may have been submerged.

The rising water is puzzling, since I am producing zero ecodamage with both factions.  Unless you are producing massive ecodamage, I think there is a bug.

Now I have cities lost, but I can see sea level rising. for some reason the other turn the cities disapiered without it.
BTW I had one city  with eco damage 8, that might have caused it. Now I have a coupe of cities with 2. I hope that will make the situation better, else Im doomed much erlier than I wanted.

Yangs son turned him over. After years of artitisical desire during which he was forced to act as head of home land security he decided he nerve stapled too many drones and he just wants to be a painter. After the Drones spy promessed him hes own art studio, the desition was made. Now a harder decition is left to made - Cubism or impresionism?

It was a very fun game!  Thanks for playing with me!

I don't mean anything by the "trash talking" about the Ministry of Love.  I just wanted to add some color to the game.

We can play again sometime if you like.

I hope Yang's son took up impressionism.  I have always been a bigger fan of Monet than Picasso, though they were both geniuses.
