Title: Mars, Now in SMAC
Post by: Matt the Czar on October 27, 2012, 03:54:40 AM
This is an attempt to make a mod akin to mars now in SMAC.  Not a true remake, but something like it with the "ideology, not nationality" feel of SMAC.

-Xenofungus will be replaced by "Animus Fluid" and spawn Replicators and arial Nanites.

-GUI change (possibly)

-more to come

In the year 2058, the world will be SEVERLY overpopulated.  In an attempt to solve the problem, the UN will send robotic mirrors and vegetation seed pods created by Virgin Galactic to Mars to start the terraforming process.  By 2061, the poles have melted sucessfully, and the hybrid vegatation has started to take hold.  However, an asteroid pulverises Austrialia, throwing enough soil into the air to start a mini ice age.  A starship is rushed into construction.  As the final wars of Earth die down, the U.N. Frontier reaches Mars in 2066 after a 2 year voyage.  They discover that their terraforming has brought forth a black Animus Fluid that has covered part of the planet.

When the last radio contact from Earth died out, the leaders on board the ship had other plans for the people onboard.  They agree to separate into several factions so the odds of survival increase.  As the ship breaks apart, they fly out to the planet below...

EDIT: sorry, soil into the air, not vice versa

I love civII, but am not familiar with the mods and cannot, therefore, vote in the poll.

I think you've got an interesting notion.  Tell us more.

Need any help with the art/creative end?

Why yes.  I have used the Union from the downloads page to replace the Spartans.

In your portaits file you have a gal called Aimie.  She would make a GREAT industrial type faction leader.

(if you dont know the mod, click SAYWHAT?)

That will make ariete very happy, I think - I told him it was good work.

Are you asking me to process Aimie into a leaderhead for you, or tell you how?  I'd rather teach a man to fish, although it might take me longer.

She's rather young, or do you have a child labor theme in mind?  Wouldn't take a lot to make her a little older, though - bigger nose, more cheekbones, mostly.

What's with the DL Matt?  We don't have a rule against so far, and you're hardly trying to sneak with that handle, so I'm just asking.

Double Login, a second member account, something forbidden most places.  Probably will be here soon enough, but we're avoiding rules as long as it's not proven to us that we need any particular one.

Matt seems to be off the member list now; I'm looking into it.

Okay; I would have found it sooner if I hadn't needed to come to this thread to find the Matt account - there's a button, and I reactivated you.  Log out and back in as Matt.

Keep the DL for now - it's publically outed, so no harm likely to be possible.  Your DL has one more post than most members, so I like him already.

Going to bed now, and sisko is having RL stuff, so try not to get in this fix again for another 8 or 9 hours.

Do you need a hand with terrain modding? I've done two terrains before, one paradise one for LE and an unreleased one based off Strawberry Fields Forever, my own Civ2 mod...

Heck no!  Children working in factories is an atrocity!  If you could post an older version of her, I'll do the rest.

That won't take all that long.  Going to lunch now, but look for something in an hour or two.

I think this is enough difference; before, she could have been as young as 12, though hard to say.  This makes her at least 18, I think.  A side-by-side comparison:

(http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=2486.0;attach=1882)   (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=2486.0;attach=1893)

Of course, I didn't touch a big clue to youth, her tiny shoulders making her head look big like a little girl.  Something to try to conceal in the cropping.

Enjoy.

...As soon as I posted that, I just HAD to go back and improve the head-shoulder proportions to give you more cropping leeway...

Compare these versions:

Barely touched the face this time, but she's a few more years older than the last try now.

You may praise me. :D

No scan lines?  That's legitimate creative choice, but you do want consistency, and the Union has scan lines - I taught ariete how to do them.

EDIT: Well, I don't know the big deal with scan lines.

Sorry to not have gotten to this sooner; there were technical difficulties when I got back from supper yesterday.

Suggestions:

1) look around Modding and have a look at Green's thread about a Mars mod "Non TCM 'Red Marble'"  - also "A spontaneous community faction project" a related thread where I think I linked GeoModder's old Mars scenario, which I think we have in Downloads.  You may want to do your own thing, or pool efforts at least partially/avoid duplication of effort.  Both are valid creative choices, but in either case you might ought to do your homework and know what's been done/is in the works.

2) For those of us unfamiliar with the C2 mod, even 2heads like me who are too lazy to download, you could be telling a lot more about your plans if you desire more kibbitzing.  Prime the pump with more ideas to help kick-start the brain...

IDEAS

idea 1: SPs.  The weather paradigm has to go.  The human genome has been sequenced.  A better ending than trancendence.  Maybe a giant warp gate a lá Stargate
Title: Re: Mars, Now in SMAC
Post by: Buster's Uncle on October 30, 2012, 11:40:47 PM
So end with a sequel ending?  "Yet more frontiers opening before us"?  A little tricky to make as satisfactory as an ending ending, but it could work.

"My God; it's full of Kurt Rusell."

On the pooling efforts possiblity?  With Kil and/or me helping on the terrain textures for both (all three, depending) I hope everyone can accept that they may have no choice but to share that part...

hi matt, i'm happy you like the Union and you consider it to use in your mod but you download the old version with old leaderhead (the nwest leaderhead i like more, go to watch it)
obviously txt are so primitive because my english is not so good when i must express my self and it need a correction
just one thing, the union, in my view, went to replace peacekeeper, federation armada, wich i can define how my jewelry or my horse battle, went to replace spartans
the choise is your
i'can't vote because i've not yet civ2 and i can't test it but i open graphics files ... so simple but so nice

I played the Civ 4 Mars, now a tiny bit, is that similar to the Civ 2 version at all?  (Apart from involving Mars.)  Will probably get some ideas for terrain, technology, etc. changes that could be made for this mod idea once I have a better sense of the world and goals of the mod.

The J did a good job, but I think he went a little overboard in some areas (afterworld units).

I spent the other day making .pngs of my custom faction collection for display in the AC Wiki - I wish more people had gone to the trouble to take and give credit in the main .pcx, especially since enough elements got recycled that it would be nice to know who did what.
