Title: t_ras learns to play professionally
Post by: t_ras on October 12, 2012, 10:00:35 PM
As I'm not such a good player and I never took the time to really read strategies, I decided to play a smac game here - and each turn I'll take advice on what to do next turn.

Only I'll be playing all factions  ;)  ;deidre; ;yang; ;zak; ;morgan; ;santi; ;miriam; ;lal; SO we learn what they all need to do. If it comes up good enough, I'll summarize it and publish.  This should be educational for new SMACers, so please pitch in and help with comments.

settings:
Huge map
Average everything
Map visible
Blind research off

Ill present here all positions, and play all factions once every two days.

Here we go!

Hmm.  It would take you three turns to settle next to the river, four to settle on it...  Probably where you are is best, in the absence of more enticing terrain.

Drair could send one between the river and see. I will have to walk a way a little any way.

And what will you do if there's fungus on the river?

I think there is fongus on the way, but there could be fongus any where else also.
What about the other facitons?

Hmm.  I would say that, with the possible exception of the Spartans, you definitely ought to settle your first base on the spot - I can't see any terrain bonuses or any bonus stuff (Monsoon Jungle, etc.) on the map, so I'd recommmend heading towards rivers and or coast with all your second colony pods - although several are on small peninsulas, like the Believers, and getting something established on the adjacent larger body(s) of land is probably the first priority.

The Spartans may get a long-term profit from moving the first CP over one square to settle on the river next to it -for the energy and unit travel bonus alike.

if some one is willing to take one of the factions I'll happily pass the control.

believers its best just to build colony pods  and pinch tech as quick as possible (honestly there the only fraction ive ever won on transcendent with multiple times)

edit if you want i am happy too

That's something new, isn't it?  It's even better if we've come up with something new.

I'm kinda excited.  ;excite;

/e A figure clad in Green wielding dual impact pistols pokes his head in after noticing.

Interesting. Cooperative AARs also bring up the question of all these unofficial patches and if these things are compatible.

I am wondering, what patch are you using and what alpha/x.txt changes do you have?

Now, I thought for a second about a cooperative AAR versus a bunch of AIs. Your idea was in a way reading my mind even if it took a bit for me to notice.

I am using scient's unofficial patch, so if there is any change associated with that patch on alphax.txt, i have those too.  I have not any other modification.

And yes, if there is anyone that knows how to carry a democracy game, then we could be on our way to have our multifaceted game.

I've been involved heavily in a DG - we let it get too complex for a crowd that wasn't used to DGs.  Keeping it simple as possible on the first one is key, I think.

For that reason I decided to play all the factions my self (which Ill do today), so it stays simple.
Of course of someone/somegroup takes responsability over a specific faction, ill do their say (actually I'll be happy for that:) ). Still since it is for educational reasons I'll keep presenting all the turns at once for every year for all to see.

Well, this isn't really a democracy game, exactly, but a hybrid of that and MP once others take over factions, and AARs.

If we're sticking to the plan to hand off faction once they meet, I guess it's my duty to volunteer to take the Gaians at that point.  I think I won't have any trouble with the AAR part...

But notice I plan to do a little story talling/role playing. I could do it acording to your decisions or you do it your self. (just for the fun)

We can coordinate in the CMN folder - you must have noticed that I'm a story-teller.  It's what I do as a modder; that, not just graphics, is my thing.

Here Come  the turns!

Gaians

As Lady Drair was releasing her firt comunicate as leader of the faction in this new world she began to understand the full weight of the responsability now laying on her shoulders, but it was not only to her followers. It was also the the plannet, its wellfare and not commiting the same mistakes humanity has done before.

"...We will settle our first home base right where we landed. The sooner we settle base the more we can recycle and the less we harm the environment. I believe we'll finish the construction before the end of this year and then we'll have a home base to make as all more confortable. Yet remember, my considarate friends, it is only the beggining of a large ecological jurney and still a lot of work is to be done.
May we all be one with nature!"

Drair knew there was more in the base settlement then just being green. No one knows if other factions survived too, but if they did she better begin preparing her self for it roght now, no time to spare. The other pod will be sent to find a good place to faund a big city.

Now too take a small bath with her favorit marin plants....

Hive

The moment the pods landed on the ground Chairman Yang Called for all his most senior ranking and close commisars to him.
He was certainly not the tipe of person to waist any time and his commisars knew that, and knew they will be bussy soon.
"commarads! This is a new beggining for the human race! we can create a new civilasation much more equal and fair that any other before. One in wich the gorvernament owns it all and takes care of every one! So now we need to kick and and begin working hard giving all we can for the succes of our ideas"
and then, without much celebration Yang began giccing orders:
"You!take care of the settlement of the first pod ASAP!. You! you take care of the perimeter defence bioldindg. You can never kneo what's out there..."
"What abut the second pod sir?"
"The second pod should go to the river and prepare to build more colonies"
Yang was very worried about the other factions, spetially morgan. If they landed a live and strong anough, their propaganda could be a disaster if heard by the yung camarads.
It doesnt matter now,he needs to take care for his people now. when time cames, He'll be ready...

To play 7 factions independantly is a huge commitment. Hell, even a AAR with one faction was a huge amount of work. I did two, with one I have kind of been delaying because I would rathered talk BS.

Uni

While sitting in the temporary council room listenning to the other proffesors trying to figure out the required strategy after the landing, Zakharov thoughts wondered away to his lab. He much rather be there reserching then dealing with strategies for his followers. But there was little choise. Humanity lost too much too many times for not listening to the brilliant minds in the academies, he could not let it happen again.

Better start working soon...

Sudenly one of the junior doctors Busrt in.
Junior Doctor - "Sir! I think we discovered something that could be very useful! We had scan the ground here and after analysing its content we naw can reform it for our needs, and we believe that if we put research to it we can be able to do very deep changes in the ground"
Zakharov - "Very well, that could be a good kick start for us. Resources seem to be scarse here"
Then he turn to the rest of the councill
"Dear colleagues,  I believe naw is time for action, if we want to have a good infraestructure to research later. Deploy the first pod and create a base in which we can build our labs. Soon we'll be deep in them..."

Morgan

...OK, let me see...if we manage to build this two plants with one warehouse in the middle it will be much more efficient in the production process...
"Sir, we have landed. The executive board is waiting for you in the meeting room for the kickstart meeting"
Morgan did not like to be disturved in the midle of his planning and his face showed it to the assistant in the door, even though he knew he must go any way.
"Tell the managers I'll be there in a couple of minutes" I really just need to finish this little bit... he though.
He did not get that high by waisting time on meetings, but by working and he still wanted it to be this way.
After a few minutes he entered the improvised meeting room and set in the biggest chair.
He pointed to the CIO
"Do we have any analysis of our sarroundings from our systems?"
CIO-"Yes, it seems we landed in a good spot with many fallen pods from the ship with goodies, but it we'll take time to explore them all. Other then that the spot is good"
Morgan-"Gentelmen, I need you to begin producing and I need it for YESTERDAY, not for tomorrow."
He looked at the COO
"Begin to build a city immidiatly and begin allready with factories and warhouses as I planned. you have the plans in your email allready. There is no time to waiste, there never is. Time is the most important resource you'll ever have. So every budy get up and start working!"
They all left the room and he was left with his thoughs...
Capitalism failed, they said. Now I'll show them how to do it properly...

Well, I'm not preparing this all from the start, so we'll have to do with 6 facionts.

Spartans

"Ma'am, Major Tom, is here"
The reconnaissance commander returns that soon? that can't be good news...
"Let him in"
Major Tom enters the office and salutes Santiago. She could see in his face he is worried
Santiago-"Free. Have you finished the expedition?"
Tom - "We have ma'am, I have the report ready"
Santiago - "Proceed then, major"
Tom - "It seems we landed on a rather small iseland and we found nothign of interest in our immidiate sarroundings,ma'am. Would you like more details?"
Santiago stopped to think for a moment and then released the officer.
There wasn't really much to think about . They had to build one base by the see and get to build ships as soon as possible. If others managed to land too and have larger pieces of territories, they might turn dangerous. But she wasn't planning to let it happen, survival comes first at any price...
She called to her adjutant "Tell the engineering commander to send a pod to the sea shore and begin the base building operation right away!"
"aye aye ma'am"
This apocalyps is the final chalnge for survivalists. Back on earth they said we're justa bunch of crazy poeple. Well let's see naw if we were that crazy then preparing for this day...

Beliavers

The improvised church was already filled with an anticipating crowd of belieavers waiting for her mass. This was their hour. Here there was no secular propaganda to missguide her sheeps. A pastor with only one visible road. She stepped up the stage and began the mass

"Beloved sons of God! you, who have seen the light other blind sheeps coudn't! This is your time!
God sent us the apocalyps! and he sent us here to revive us! This is the time of actions. we must now build a world which will enalbe us to concentrate in our prayers and our spiritual jorney to redemption!
Let us all feel the love of God flowing through us and let our hands be the tools of his all mighty will!
Heaven awaits for the ones who believe, and now is the time to build the spitiritual road to there!
Dear brothers and sisters, may God bless as all!"

She continued with the mass for about an hour, exating her audience. She then retired to her quarters for a final private preyer before meeting the bishops to give them orders. Maybe God will send a brighter light to shine on her...

She new that right now she needed to set a place for the sacred alter to be properly worship God. But the territory was small for the two pods and sending the second pod away will leave it separated in the distance...more separated the sheeps should be from their shepherd...there was little opion though, it must be done this way. She just prayed the long distance comunication would be enough to keep her sheeps well guided.

Ok, now waiting for consultations.
I would need to know what to research for each faction (since I havn't touched it.
Also if any one wants a faction I would let him take the decisions, as long as the reasons for them are explained.
CU!

Sparta is in a terrible starting position for a non-builder.  I suggested heading toward doctrine: flexibility to get off the island.

Believers should head for doctrine: mobility, Physics (attack 2), and planned, but for the first 10 turns, they do not get any research anyway.

With all builder factions, I beeline toward Industrial Automation.

I am trying to give you the short term goals, since I do not know what techs are available to research, and you might have to sidetrack occasionally.

Believers should take advantage of that little land bridge, and explore ASAP.  They should build additional scout units up to their very high support limit.

Everyone else should probably build one scout and then a colony pod, depending on whether they can grow faster enough before the colony pod is built.

This is my starting advice, for what it is worth.

If you have specific questions, I will try to address them.
