[A discussion of the proposed Mars One mission veered off into making a Richard Branson faction. What follows this OP are the relevant posts.]

Mission, Vision and Feasibility
Mars One (http://mars-one.com/)’s mission objective
Mars One plans to establish the first human settlement on Mars by April 2023. The first crew of four astronauts emigrate to their new planet from Earth, a journey that takes seven months. A new team will join the settlement every two years. By 2033 there will be over twenty people living, working and flourishing on Mars, their new home.
The vision of Mars One
A manned mission to Mars is one of the most exciting, inspiring and ambitious adventures that mankind can take on. We see this as a journey that belongs to us all, and it is for this reason that we will make every step one that we take together. This will also be our way to finance the mission: the mission to Mars will be the biggest media event ever!
The entire world will be able to watch and help with decisions as the teams of settlers are selected, follow their extensive training and preparation for the mission and of course observe their settling on Mars once arrived. The emigrated astronauts will share their experiences with us as they build their new home, conduct experiments and explore Mars. The mission itself will provide us with invaluable scientific and social knowledge that will be accessible to everyone, not just an elite select few. Join us in this adventure. Put it on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn or whatever platforms are available to you, and spread the word!
A realistic plan
The Mars One team has worked on this plan since early 2011. That first year saw us research the feasibility of the idea extensively and exhaustively, scrutinizing every detail with countless specialists and expert organizations. In this analysis we not only included the technical elements, but also comprehensively discussed the financial, psychological and ethical aspects.
We have met with several established, international aerospace companies who can design and deliver the essential hardware components for the Mars mission. These have written letters of interest that support our plan.
We have an impressive list of people who support the mission to Mars, our ambassadors. One of them is professor dr. Gerard 't Hooft, Physics Nobel Prize winner of 1999.
We were this thorough in our preparations for a reason. A project as ambitious as sending a manned mission to Mars can only be presented credibly when it can stand on its own two feet. We have a feasible plan and a way to finance it. We are ready to go, will you join us?
they have a project, they have the suppliers and a forseeable timeline, but they have no money.. at least, till now.
the plan is to broadcast everything and make it a "Big Brother" show. this will attract potential sponsors in their view.
but who wants to watch Big Brother in space every day? (besides a bunch of SMACers, of course)
so, is this really going to happen or not?
-
...Initial sponsors include Byte Internet (a Dutch Internet/Webhosting provider); Dutch lawfirm VBC Notarissen; Dutch consulting company MeetIn; New-Energy.tv (an independent Dutch web station that focuses on energy and climate); and Dejan SEO (an Australia-based search engine optimization firm). [Video: 'Big Brother' on Mars?]...
that's what? ::) 0.01% of the budget rounded up? ;D
At least 0.01%
Methinks they need to 'entice' some of the 0.01% to come on board - it just might appeal to the vanity/hubris of the Bransons/Gateses/Zuckerthings.. Branson would be my fave, let's face it, HE'LL be up suborbital within two years.
But any 'name' would require Mars-->Earth upgrade planing. Not an impossibility either.

would be nice to have Branson onboard this project but this is not his 'baby'. he likes too much his own ideas to get involved in this.

Just need to convince him that it's his idea to 'bring them back'. Once he's had a bit of suborbital '100-mile high club' (or whatever) he'll be tempted to throw in.
Branson does seem to like himself, doesn't he?
He always has. But he's a shrewd businessman for all of his egocentric vanity. I even owned shares in his outfit when he took it public nearly 30 years ago. He also pretty soon after, took it private again. No-one lost money!). Whisper the big Mars deal in his ear - convince him that there's a high-probability return strategy and I bet he'd bite. He'd also be looking to turn a profit on the deal too - and probably would on past form.
-
There's that - he gets results, and he loves flamboyant, high-profile projects.

we have a new faction leader!
a SMAC 'Virgin' faction anyone?

Okay, sorta another Morgan. Going to Alpha Centauri certainly sounds like something he'd do.
Portrait's not problem, and neither should the logo be - how about bases and diplomacy landscape?

Pretty impressive stuff sisko.
The retro-French toilet seat base look works for me (somehow) . Either are great Diplos.

I'm sorely tempted to CTRL-Q my current game, mock a faction up with those specs and give it a whirl.
It was only two minutes of cogitation, a suggestion, mods welcome.

Okay, I'm running on only a few hours of sleep, and need to take a nap, but I think I can slap something together before y'all get up tomorrow.

The 'somebody called' random event triggered and I got sidetracked, but here's the most time-consuming bit, the leaderhead, already dropped in. Hopefully, my brain will be more functional tomorrow.

Yeah.
Here's the logo. I hue-shifted the Virgin Galactic logo to a golden color.

OMG! LOL...
Well, he made a fortune selling 1 USD (or less) to make CDs for 20 USD a pop in his Virgin Megastores that were located in the top 50 US cities. Now that the internet killed all that, he branches out.
Virgin Mobile actually is a pretty good deal. In fact I use cell phone, game and post online through a tether at 200- 300 ms, no stupid contract, decent service. I often joke to the Virgin Mobile counterperson that i am making another payment on Spaceship2 whe I pay phone/internet. I still say his Virgin galactic is just an expensive rollercoaster ride. Elon Musk and Bigalowe have it more nailed.
But.. back on topic.
Mars one seems like the "space elevator project". A money sink going nowhere.
No... you do not want to film every move or have some corp on earth owning "rights" to intellectuall property on Mars. The lack of privacy is asking for animosity. You want to go like Morgan with a combo of Miriam. Freedom. But, there is no freedom when only "the select few" can escape. You also need industrial base to make things out of stuff there. To quote SMAX, "One does not create a dataprobe out of sand....."
-
Weellll, it seems like a Branson faction ought to have a dash of retail/entertainment/shipping/communications to it - though how you'd get that across any more than they did with Morgan, I don't know. I've argued before that Morgan is Donald [Sleezebag] - which is fairly true as far as personality. But Branson is closer as far as diversity of business interests, and for that matter, in that backing the Unity project and then stowing away sounds more like Branson.
...
I'd think that the privacy concerns vis the reality show wouldn't be the problem. The sort of people who make good astronauts are very careful, self-controled folks, the sort who line up their shoes a certain way at bedtime and practice fantastic impulse control. How would the producers get them to fight, and badmouth each other in interviews?
The drink/screw/squabble sorts that populate these things aren't my idea of good TV at all, but if they didn't get over with most people, those shows would be different.
I doubt anyone planing this has considered it; a group of ice-cold workaholic PhDs talking about their work is hardly going to make for $2.6-billion-dollar TV. It'll tank pretty fast if the mission goes well.

Taken your Branson.pcx out for a 'Test-toast' with a TXT file I knocked together, filling the Branson2 and 3 slots with Hive clones for the moment.
BUncle, it looks seriously nice on the landscape!
Can't say quite the same about the gameplay, I might have handicapped him too much. I'll post a copy of it as soon as I've given it a bit more testing.
(He*l, I don't have a monopoly on assigning fac parameters; but I did give him a penalty for Fundamentalism...)

We'll need to see a screeny, then.
Of course, we want to post the final product in downloads when it's ready. I've enjoyed working on a number of community projects, but few get completed.

That's going to likely be problematic. ANY other game I could cap a screeny, but SMACX is THE one exception. Doesn't matter if I have Photoshop 7 running in the b/g, whatever I cap is acidhouse.
But I can attach a copy of the fileset later on today. I'm just knocking a few typos out atm. It's been unusual gameplay on a huge planet map.
-
Screenshots is easy when you know how; tab out of the game (Windows key, or something of the sort) and paste WHILE the game's still running. It'll still look wrong at the moment, but when you exit the game, the colors will be right.
-
That's EXACTLY what I've tried in the past. Seems the printscreen utility just has a mind of its own and saves the image to a directory rather than the clipboard. As a result it's already saved in a choice of formats, but saved "acidhouse style"

WinXP SP3.
There doesn't seem to be a version of MS Paint involved with this particular distro (hence the use of Photoshop7)
Also there was no Redmond sired printscreen utility so I installed 'Gadwin Printscreen Pro'. I think it's THAT that spoils the party.
-
I think so, too; I never had any trouble on XP. Can you just use the [Prt Scr] button, or does Gadwin usurp that? Is there a way to turn Gadwin off?
I've never failed on a screenshot problem as long as the user hung in there...

Oh, we'll get this sorted out eventually. The Gadwin deelie I had to install because the OS did zilch when "Printscreen" was pressed.
10-1 ON that it's the culprit. Any recommends for a third-party PS utility BU??
(Just about to post "BRANSON alpha" from the same machine)
-
Just posting an archive for BRANSON.
As previously noted, Branson.pcx is BUncle's creation. Branson2.pcx and Branson3.pcx are "Hive clones" as is the .flc file.
Having played 'Plutarch Branson' for 200+ turns on a huge planetmap, I can give the following report.
It was a LOT of fun. :)
The extra Economy and Commerce advantages, coupled with an extra research point per base (NOTE - this is NOT +1 RESEARCH) sound good, but without Gaian efficiency, the 110% research cost and the -1 GROWTH tend to keep you honest. Population does grow, Golden ages are possible early on but are more 'Consciousness-like' than 'Hive-like'.
After the discovery of AMA all of that will go out of the window and you'll need another set of modalities to 'boom'.
My impression was that base research wasn't so shafted when all the Punishment Spheres popped up.
I thought they halved research, but they may only be halving the research bonus.
Early probe teams are pretty fragile (-4 PROBE) and this Achilles Heel can't be easily tested on a huge map - but at a guess, my bases could be mind controlled for the cost of a used mindworm..
I'll find this out soon when Miriam wants New Jerusalem back in a few turns [contains the Command Nexus if I can make it stick]
I didn't make FUNDAMENTAL an antithesis, but I gave him a penalty for using it (no help there for PROBE)
Free rec commons and a +1 POLICE look to make it too easy (P Sphere later) but all credit to Green1 for the prompt.
Anyone want to try the new Diva?
(He's an old school Brit who likes serfdom)
-
I've never messed with screeny utilities - I just fell into helping people troubleshoot screeny problems a long time ago. This particular problem is a new one by me, but that's not the first time for that.
Have you tried [Alt][Prt Scr]?
-
Alt-Printscreen NOGO
(I uninstalled Gadwin first)
Also
Alt-Gr
SHIFT
and combined variations give nada too.
-
Show me one of those acidhouse screenies...

Like this?

Yeah. I wanted to make sure that applying the SMAC pallette wouldn't fix it. Acidhouse is right.
Hmmm. Maybe try googling [Prt Scr] problems for XP?
-

I tried "Win XP Printscreen" and then got a 60meg (!) d/l of "Snagit trial"
THAT works very nicely:--
If I had a gripe about the seabases, it would be that they look to be sitting on a washer.
-
Upshot is
Gadwin PrintScreen Pro = Morgan Pharmaceutical blotter facility
Snagit demo = Gaian Transcend training utility.
Additionally, since I blew up my old 4-3 aspect flatscreen after 10 years of sterling service, I've become accustomed to squattie/fattie units roaming Chiron on the replacement 16:9 unit. I've never sussed a workable sizing mod for SMACX to get round this.
Snagit, renders the screenshot "square" for 4:3 even though I actually see it "stretched" to 16:9.
Bizarre.

Updated BRANSON txt file to cure typos and make sure that the Datalinks correctly state what the situation is with the Research.
I'm open to any suggestions for improvements, but my experience is that 'He' has not so easy a time of it.
I left the AI prefs as interested in all 4 majors with a 'maybe' for use of force.
Paradoxically, drone riots are possible. Conquered bases should not usually have PS facilities, but they seem to spawn erratically - a bit like Naval Yards, but since it's a faction sired facility, Branson can't scrap them.
I made an esoteric discovery in writing the TXT file that was probably known to everyone but me:--
If you use [these brackets] in the Datalink section instead of {these braces} the text gets displayed in italics.
Well, it was new to me...
-
Heh good thing Buster's Uncle posted in his graphics thread or I'd have never known about this. Very funny idea guys, I love the leaderhead. I might suggest a bit of cleaning up of the faction logo, and yes the waterbases are a bit basic... I can help out in a pinch if necessary.
Oh and heh, I have a Virgin mobile. :P

Don't forget Dave Pitt!
"Essays on Mind and Money" <-- :P Sounds like somebody copy/pasted from Hive. Same for the treaty/war ones.
I spotted a few purple pixels on the leaderhead--not sure if they were deliberate.
I didn't know about [square brackets]!
-

Odd; I'd noticed a blip on the forehead, but not thought much of it. You can see that it wasn't there when I posted just the leaderhead, which was cropped out of the faction graphic. I think when I loaded the SMAC palette in Photoshop, some white pixels decided they were transparent.
Here it is corrected.

"Essays on Mind and Money" <-- :P Sounds like somebody copy/pasted from Hive. Same for the treaty/war ones.
Mea culpa. Comes from using Facedit (sic) to kick off a new faction textfile, pasting in the index header from Brian's and editing the results.
Looks like I might have left a few Hivisms behind in the process which I am getting round to correcting.
I didn't know about [square brackets]!
It really was new to me too. But a few days later, as part of my "clean-up" as noted above, I was trawling through 'script.txt' looking for something related - and found THIS almost at the beginning:--
; 6) The "{" and "}" characters are used to indicate text which should
; be displayed in BOLD type. The "[" and "]" characters indicate
; text which should be displayed in ITALIC type. A {} sequence or
; a [] sequence can begin and end on different lines.
;
; 7) Lines beginning with "^" begin on new lines.
;
; 8 ) Lines beginning with "^^" are centered.
So, it was there all along, written in 1997 by the Firaxis team.
Interesting note: you can see the results of using [ ] brackets at game setup for the Virgin faction BUT if you look up the faction profile through F1 there's NO italic used, it's all squashed to normal font type.
I'm still getting my head around that oddity, but my current best guess would be that alphacentauri.ini values take senior precedence.
Interesting note #2: the [ ] brackets don't seem to work as advertised within the 'movlist.txt' file. On the other hand, the ^ and ^^ operands DO seem functional. Italic type is possible during projects but it's a different hack and has a few variations. I'll post a separate how-to thread when I've dotted all of the "i"s.
-

Looks fine now. All zits cleared up!
I'm definitely going to have to do something about the PSphere bug. About 80% of conquered bases spawn a parasitic PS (much worse than Naval Yards with Sven. As a result, drones should be a bigger problem outside of 'his' rump territory. They're not. The PSs don't seem to be halving research at all now...
I'll try gifting Deirdre with a base that has a NN and a biolab , see if the PS is passed on as well and what the result is.
-
I'll try gifting Deirdre with a base that has a NN and a biolab , see if the PS is passed on as well and what the result is.
Fat chance there.
We aren't talking. Only Santiago isn't at 'Branson's' throat. As it turns out, Branson is anathema to ALL female factions -- a true Ladies Man (NOT!, the only reason the Spartans are mollified is bc VALUES=POWER for Branson atm.
Had to mod Branson anyway -- ROBUST ECONOMY is an oxymoron as it turns out. ""There are no genes for weaker economy"" (to misquote) NO social setting handicaps ECONOMY.
Still no joy handicapping the RESEARCH via PSs -- looks like a bug -- can't remember if this happened with any of the Borg factions from yesteryear, maybe BUncle, sisko or someone else remembers?
If I can't get that to work it'll have to come out and 'he'll' have to be handicapped in some other fashion I suppose....
-
I don't know anything about it.
-
So what are the current stats?
-
Different game, on a different installation - vanilla PPack with no patches just to see if I can work out what's happening with the research handicap. And I might just have an answer.
My earlier gripe that as soon as Branson gets his Psheres the research rate goes from 6 years to ... 6 years and yet it FELT slower in the research department because it WAS slower and I was fooled from noticing how the slowdown was happening. Take the following example:--
I start researching N-Space in 2351 and according to F2 menu I'm good for 2-tear breakthroughs (also 2 years in social screen). Here's three screenies:--
You don't notice the research change per base, nothing seems to change there. Nothing seems to change in the F2 screen -- X points for the next tech, Y per MY -- but each year you get nerfed for half the research! The obvious 'error' is in HOW it's presented to the player.
I live and learn.
-
Interesting.
How close would you say you are to being finished? I assume you want me to do Branson2.pcx and Branson3.pcx? I usually don't bother, but I wouldn't mind.
Kil, would you like to describe what cleaning up you think the logo needs, or even do it yourself?
-

Pretty close. I really would be grateful for a version of the other .pcx's. I'm finished for tonight (your time +6hrs) but intend to try 'him' in a contemporaneous SMACX tomorrow and also run him a couple of times as AI. I think the ver1.6 file is about as good as I can make it -- I took Kil's criticisms on board and rewrote the datalinks. I've had more than a few very refreshing games. And they weren't easy imho.
-
Thanks for freshening them up. :)
The logo seems a bit dull, lack of contrast, and a bit sharp on the edges. Also the cresent on the bottom left seems a bit random.
What do you think?
-
Dunno. The original was a bit amorphous, but the cresent was part of it.
I guess I need to have another look at what I did with it.
-
Okay sure! Was just putting in my 2c. :)

BUncle, If you could post a copy of whatever you have for the Virgin logos I'll have a bit of time over the w/e to knock the Branson2 and 3 pcxs out. My opinion was that the Hive versions have a female occupant in the Punishment Sphere, which looked a bit outré really, so I'm putting a male oriented version together involving a cap from "loseman.wve" which I'll hopefully post up if anyone's interested.
-
You're in luck; I did save a largish copy - this is just the Virgin Galactic logo hue-shifted.
-
Perfect.
I'll even have a go at deriving some gold coloured bits for monument pics etc.
Thanks Man.
-
Do you want me to have my bash at the logo and/or sea city?
-
It would be fine by me.
-
I'll check what Davy says/does, wouldn't want to repeat work he's done.
-
Fine by me too.
I've got a logo on a (now male PS captive) which I faked up as noted previously. But I've had trouble getting gold coloured logos for diplo / monument use. This is my current offering but it's less than ideal.
-
It seems like it does have too much white left around the edges, but it's hard to see what can be done with the thing.
-

I'm not too bothered about the white highlights -- with an icon derived from an iris there are never going to be any regular shapes / shaping to line up with much. I was more p*ssed off with my own colour shifts / inverts to get the gold iconlets.
I'm better pleased with THIS offering (even though the 'old-gold' look seems to have copied over as bronze.
-
@BUncle and @Kilkakon
This was the intermediate template and the moviecapture that I faked it up from. Bearing in mind that it's rough, and also that a mucking great FacIcon would cover the central stuff, does it have ANY merit?
-
It has merit.

Maybe try it with the black removed and the contrast on the rest cranked up around 40%?
-
Or even go for the embossed, gold-effect as though mimicking a hit record as it were?
-
Ooooh!
-
It looks greenish on this page but not so much in Gimp. (and the white bits don't matter anymore)
-
But how will it look in the SMAC(X) palette? You might want to hue-shift that about 10%, depending.
-
Good thinking. I'll look into it asap. Other stuff just "came up".
-
Ah- the "telephone" random event.

Ah- the "telephone" random event.
Close. Very close.
But it was actually the "trudge to the fridge to re-beer myself". Doesn't usually have a negative downside unless my forward planning is totally shot.
(Remind me how to load the palette pcx in GIMP. I've dropped a copy into [PATH]/palettes but don't seem able to access it.)
This is what the relogoed Branson3.pcx looks like though:--
-
Niice.
You want Image>Mode>Indexed...>Use custom palette>uncheck Remove unused colors from palette>the color square between them>select the SMAC(X) palette.
Booze up and mod - I like it.
-
Hmmm
Image>Mode>Indexed..
That's straightforward and already set. The rest - not so much.. I had looked up palettes - tried importing directly from Firaxis' pcx (lazy and not possible) But you CAN import from an open .pcx file, it seems - so I made this SMACX entry from 'palette.pcx'
Not sure how to use it yet, but it'll dawn on me in the end.
-
Let me poke around a bit - I have instructions somewhere about installing a SMAC(X) palette, if that's what you want to know. I only had to do it once, so it's hard to recall...
-
Sure no prob.
I hedged anyway when knocking that up, by dropping from the background and bucket filling cut outs, unless I could undo something.
In-game - while they're not Holbein or DaVinci the monument stuff might suffice at a pinch - at least it's recognizable.
Haven't had the pleasure of rubbing Dickieboy out yet to see how the other stuff performs but the PS clip was from one of their 15fps movies and looks strikingly like images on their <insertfaction>3.pcx files.
OT - Because Mr.B arrives with so little, no tech, no xs energy, I toyed with the idea of giving him a mindworm. Certainly it helps because he suffers mobility issues like all PLANET=<0 contestants. But I can't think of a good reson for him to posess such advanced technology.
Off now to play him again w/o worm.
-
Finally. Found it. You can import the palette from any SMAC(X) .pcx in place of blank.pcx.pcx.
"Windows>Dockable Dialogues>Palettes. Right-click on any palette in the menu>Import Palette. Check Image, the second option, below Gradient, and blankpcx.pcx(and a number) and import. "
If the file you're working with is is already set to Indexed, set it to RGB and back, following the previous instructions. You really need a blank copy of *3.pcx to paste your work into, 'cause if you touch the purple background -erase and re-fill, or whatever- it turns non-transparent.
Am I answering what you're asking?
-
Yup pretty much. That's how I got that dockable palette sidebar. The import didn't quite work the way you describe, so I sneaked round it.
When I'm back on the job in the morning I'll reset the indexing as you suggest, that should smarten up the gold Virgin logos.
The template I basically worked from was an ancient NNode version blank - the one withe the dark swirly smudge where the logo goes, but because I didn't fancy that with a yellow logo going in, I cut the panel out and tried making my own for practice, didn't like the straight edge near the middle, couldn't figure how to turn it into something neutral - so I chopped in a second 'victim' for a bit of company.
I was pretty careful with the panel cutting and only used the purple as a reference colour to fill voids with a copy of their purple. Seems to work OK. My eyes have reached the astigmatic limit for today though - playing a couple of quizzes finished them off good.
(and no it's not the beer...) ;D
-
Hmmm. My experience of the last year is that GIMP can't handle the transparency purple unless it's not been touched. I still use Photoshop as my last step on a faction graphic, to load the palette before I make my final save - as it can.
-
I'll make my attempt of those logos and so on today to see what you boys think. :)
-
I'll make my attempt of those logos and so on today to see what you boys think. :)
Feel free bub!
-
Well I've had a bash at the logos! I'm pretty time poor right now so I won't be able to attack those sea cities yet, but I'll wait to see what you guys think of this logo attempt. If you like it, then I can attempt to add scanlines and do the colour remapping of the little logos to blue. I'll be the first to admit that my branson3 is very rough and is LE style as well (I have opaque logos on the monument in LE) but hey it's something to look at.
-
You've certainly cleaned it up, and it doesn't miss the cresent at all. I'm gonna put in the scanlines...
-
Yeah, looks nice...
-
Maybe if we had a large version of this cleanup so D-boy can gold up that sucker?
-
How do you mean BUncle?
You fancy some of those logos changing?
-
As he said, his branson3.pcx is very rough - the golding you worked out is very nice...
-
Would you like the crescent cut off like this? Or left on?
-
I guess off - Kil doesn't like it, it takes up space the rest could use, and we're altering the logo considerably anyway.
-
From what I've seen of the gold (Gilded Virgin?) in game the crescent looks a bit rough over the monument because of the necessary down scaling. Sort of lumpy and just hanging there being in the way.
Any other alteration welcome - just say.
-
Oh my.
I've just tumbled the innuendo on the monument display.
It's "Eye in The Sky" by P K Dick........
-
What do people think of the walls and the metal circle underneath the toilet seat thing?
-
I think they're crap bases, honestly.
-
Want me to have a go at them myself? I wouldn't want to step on your toes or anything.
Have you tried the gilded logo with the multiply or overlay modifier?
-
You guys need to be a bit fair and give the other space factions a chance.
Elon Musk wants a piece of Branson's tail!!!
...and he has his own ideology and starting tecks and thinks he can win.
And what about Bigelowe over in Vegas?
-
You guys need to be a bit fair and give the other space factions a chance.

Toooo funny!!!
I nearly ruined another STDIN and have even more spatter over STDOUT. I tried to write 'Branson' wimpy and effete, and unless he can stay out of trouble while he gets established -- ANYONE can own his tail..
Are you feeling like writing his arch-nemesis into the game too?!?! ;D
-
...Post me some pictures for leaderhead, bases, logo, and diplomacy landscape, and I'll knock together a SpaceX faction graphic...
(Go for it, Kil.)
-
What do people think of the walls and the metal circle underneath the toilet seat thing?
Wait, those were toilet seats?
:o
-
They sure look like it...

Branson himself may be wimpy, but you got to remember... he has bad ass folks in his employ.
Do not believe me? Burt Rutan!
While other folks that age are laying up in a nursing home getting high on prescription meds and peeing on themselves, Rutan owns face. In the SMAX future, Burt Rutan is a cyborg who still has Elvis sideburns. Rutan is so hardcore, if you want to be his apprentice you have to build your own aircraft from scratch then fly it over to New Mexico to join him.
At this point, he probably has replaced his heart with a machine and has a metal gauntlet with an impact weapon.
Like or dislike Branson, but I would give him a bit more teeth particularly when he keeps the company of demigods.
-
I didn't know Virgin had a security division. XD What are they, Company of Answers (a faction from my C&C mod who try to take over the world)?
-
I didn't know Virgin had a security division. XD What are they, Company of Answers (a faction from my C&C mod who try to take over the world)?
Yeah Kilkakon, Branson is not a joke. He should have his own definate strengths in a scenario like this.
Also remember, Branson STOLE Rutan directly from a man only second to Bill Gates --- Paul Allen of Microsoft.
But Allen is not concerned, for he has found a NEW secret weapon! This weapon thought left for dead and betrayed. His precious ideas ridiculed. HIS birthright ...TAKEN! His future seemingly relegated to the footnotes of wikipedia and some cushy college professorship. The door opens, and hood reveals the another faction leader... Micheal Griffin formerly of NASA! And he wants vengence against both Musk and Branson for challenging his "genius".
Unfortunately, all our faction leaders arrive finally at Mars about the same time. But, there is a catch. It turns out that crackpot Richard C. Hoagland was right! There are martian natives!
Hoagland told them so on coast to coast... but our heroes did not listen...
Oh my... a mod.
-
I am feeling kind or creative today and had to double post on this.
Kilkakon, I checked out your youtube channel and you had a Let's Play of Ultima: Martian Dreams. For those unfamiliar, it was an adventure on Mars with Victorian era heros like Sigmund Frued, Carnegie, Tesla, and many others. Now the gameplay of that is horribly outdated and after watching you play it, I was going damn... we put up with that stuff back in the day?
But I say the heroes of today are far more interesting than the heroes of the Victorian era. We have even better mythology with our crackpots. We have figures who are just as large in life as Twain, Carnegie, etc.
What about a mod like that? I will write fluff and story... about MODERN space age heroes like the current crop of space industry folks actually ending up on a Mars that is Hoagland inspired instead of Lowell inspired:)
Think of the nerds that would LOVE that!
-
THE FACTIONS:
The Planetary Society.
Leader - Bill Nye, CEO
Say what you want to about Bill Nye. A joke. A kid's show host. But Bill Nye is no Captian Kangaroo or Mr. Rogers or Teletubie. Nye is the hier apparent and disciple of Carl Sagan! For decades, he studied under Sagan's shadow. He absorbed Sagan's knowledge and drank beer with Buzz Aldrin and Stephen Hawking. To get money, he did silly educational shows until the time was ripe to take over the Planetary Society. Now, with the technology of the solar sail and mindless amatuer drones at UMSF in his thrall, he sets his sights on Mars. Know what else? He's pissed. He wants you to kneel before him as the new Sagan. Beoooch.
-2 growth. Nye has had horrible relations with the opposite sex. His one wife divorced days later and he had to get a restraining order he pissed her off so much!!
+1 Research. Nye takes after his former master and encourages new scientists. Being already on Mars encourages that further.
-
Faction:
Stratolaunch
Leader: Micheal Griffin, CEO
In the aftermath of the Ansari X-Prize, Paul Allen was not concerned with the apparent loss of Talent Burt Rutan to Sir Richard Branson of the Virgin Galactic faction. Griffin was the mastermind of NASA's Constellation project, an aggressive program to go to the moon then Mars. However, due to disillusionment to his management and his patron in government being ousted, Griffin was crushed and apparently delegated to the dustbin of history.
Now he is back! And, Due to Allen's wealth is on Mars like he wanted all along till fools like Obama gave it to Musk. He is pissed, too. He would love no more than to embarass the current other factions and prove his rightness!
-2 Support. Nerdlike engineer alienates the common man.
+1 Industry. being a former administrator of NASA helps keep supplier relationships.
GETS FREE CONVENTIONAL MISSILE. The Aries I lives!
-
Mytholgy..
Bill Gates has in his possesion a document known as the Codex Hammer. This is the notebooks of Leonardo DavVinci but named after Armand Hammer, founder of Arm and Hammer baking soda that got possesion of this. Paul Allen drank beer with Gates and was privy to it's secrets.
The secrets affected each differently. Gates, with his new wife, malinda, decided to concentrate here on Earth.
Allen wanted to play with the other players. hence, our factions.
-
Which brings to mind Hoagland and metagame.
Now, there has to be some way for automatic sattelites. No faction with our current tech can go to Mars without it. Speaking of sattelites, sky hydroponics is stupid. Any way to get rid of that? Why grow stuff in space when land is available?
Human Genome project has already been discovered. All factions would probably get one free talent, even though the AC version smacks of eugenics. Still, I could see it due to strict applicaton processes all factions would have.
Pods would be ruins of Pathfinder, Viking, Opportunity, Pheonix, etc that prove Hoagland's theories.
-
Working on what Kilkakion quicked up for the logo, how about this version for monument use?
(Yes, I'm having transparency and sizing issues because I'm way out of my comfort zone(!) )
-

Unfortunately, (and I admire your enthusiasm) in this area you're going to be disappointed in all likelihood. This line from alphax warns against trying to give space improvements:--
FACILITY = Every new base gets this free facility.
; Param indicates facility (e.g. "4" is
; a Perimeter Defense) from the facilities
; list. Do NOT attempt to give satellites
; and secret projects this way.
OK, for scenarios it may be different. Even so - since you need Aero Complexes or the Cloudbase to build them in the first place, certainly to get the best return from 'Ponics and Powersats, it might look odd if you could assign sats prior to the relevant tech.
Speaking of sattelites, sky hydroponics is stupid. Any way to get rid of that? Why grow stuff in space when land is available?
Just change 'Orbital' to 'Disable' in this line of alphax:--
Sky Hydroponics Lab, 12, 0, Orbital, Disable, +1 Nutrient ALL BASES
Personally, I like them. They help me win the game.
-
Working on what Kilkakion quicked up for the logo, how about this version for monument use?
That is almost Egyptian! Which would fit with a Hoagland conspiracy since the Face on Mars is often coupled with Pyramids.
It also impies more mythology. Maybe Branson knows things, too :D
-
As far as satellites, I would be willing to comprimise for entire terrain revealed with no fog of war and hydroponic sattalites disabled. At first off, building satellites would not be realistic. But, they would have at least one as part of the lander.
Geesh.. all these guys would have time to MRO, Hubble, or whatever.
Some techs would need to be renamed.
I am not sure how to disable water in a random game. Scenario, yes. But it really needs replayability.
-
I'm game for some faction graphics, if you'll throw me some pictures to work with. For each, I'll need a portrait, a logo, a base and a diplomacy landscape. The latter two are the toughest, but might be the same thing...
-
Do not believe me? Burt Rutan!
While other folks that age are laying up in a nursing home getting high on prescription meds and peeing on themselves, Rutan owns face. Does Rec Commons need a "Burt Rutan Facts" thread?
-
Here's my attempt at the city and sea city. Didn't get time to do walls, but I can do them after people say yay or nay.
I liked your gold flower there Davy! I've attached the naked one as I forgot to do it last time, in case it helps.
-
It has the virtue of a definite bottom.
-
Hahaha is that good or bad? :D
-
Hahaha is that good or bad? :D
You know the answer to that.
"A toilet seat should always have a good bottom."
-
It's good, as well as a pun.
-
Ahhh okay. XD Well in that case I'll whip up some walls for ya shortly then.
EDIT: Woo crisp totodile icon. :D
-
;D
W00t indeed, sir.
-
@Kil
Go with throttle up.
On a dry huge random planet with minimal sea to sort of sim Mars - which is where this all started - a random group of Terran survivors try to survive as best they can in this horrible environment.
Playing as Deirdre, it turned out that I'm local to a Mr R Branson, whom I have befriended (sic) to keep an eye upon. Other participants seem to be the Free Drones, The Planet Cult, both Alien facs, and Wacky Zacky.
It's 2190 and everyone except me is having a miserable time of it being so dry.
I think I'll have to tweak Branson's AI -- he keeps on building units to rush out of his bases leaving them unoccupied.
Any of you have suggestions for his AI prefs? He currently classes as Erratic (sometimes use force) and 1,1,1,1 for the other AI traits (ie ALL of them, like Sid) I think he's just confused and trying to be all things at once.
-
{Sigh}
You all realize that this means that I'll probably feel compelled to add a few new basenames reflecting their design etymology?
There, that was the polite way of indicating that this could descend into British toilet humour.
-
;D That's just wrong, man.
-
At least they're shiny...
-
At least they're shiny...
Nice -- but the Perim and Tach for bases size 2 look too big Kil.
-
;D That's just wrong, man.
I've already put in some effete, risqué, and outré names and even an innuendo here and there...
I think "Alien : Recycling Plant" is already there....... (it is)
So what harm could honouring a few of the knighted members of the garter such as Sir John Harington and Thomas Crapper whose contributions to civilized development are often taken for granted.
:)
-
Want me to fix up the walls? My template only has 2 sizes of wall.
-
The perimeter defenses? Why not?
-
It would be very nice if you could, Kil
-
Okay fine, I'll do it tonight or tomorrow. I suppose I can update my LE/Acolyte cities while I'm at it.
-
The version of the logo Branson would be going with probably if he went space would be the blue eye Virgin Galactic logo:
-
That's what I used. I was going with a sort of substitute Morgan thing with the colors. Him and Morgan would understand each other, I think.
-
The colours are fine and there is a distinctive difference between Branson's troopers and Marr's, apart from the fact that one uses alien art.
From a first person pov playing the Virgin faction it's no problem at all, but when you see those mustard coloured flags on Branson your ally wandering around your map, it keeps you, well, alert.
-
Here's the fixed walls. Took an hour, but yay, now everybody can have medium sized walls! *goes and quickly throws them on all the LE factions, woo they look awesome*
Will have to update the Acolyte download on my site soon...
And now for my next trick, attaching the actual file.
-
Thanks Kil, that looks MUCH nicer and well proportioned. :)
-
No problem! :) I hope that we can finish this off soon, as the first PCX is pretty much done, not sure about the others or the TXT...
-
Putting final tests / polish on the text file. There's only one way to test it and it takes time.
I'm feeling that he should have a prohibition against Free Market but that just comes out wrong, no commercial type is anti FM.
Since he had Explore, Discover, Build and Conquer I'm taking Discover 'away' as a modus operandi . Comments welcome.
-
Anything I throw together as quickly as my first draft of the .pcx isn't my very best work - good job with the tweeks.
-
Thank you. :D I hope that you boys can sort out the rest of them (you were partway through doing so).
Good luck on the AI Davy.
-
Good luck on the AI Davy.
(Phew!)
-
I changed a munificent one character from 1 to 0 effectively changing .... Branson, M, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, to ....Branson, M, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1,
effectively taking away the AI proclivity towards 'power'. Oh that's done it I think; only played a few games to about 2190 ish and that boy seems to get going like Morgan never did.
He'll probably fall out with all of the Female facs and Zacky won't like Wealth either, and he's probably susceptible to an early rush, so that'll be any of the above mentioned darlings.
Posting the file later from the other machine as an edit to this post.
BUncle and Kilkakon's Branson.pcx, Branson2.pcx which I extracted from Branson3.pcx after I had logo-ed it with Kil's main logo and the gold/bronze monument things that I knocked out.
-
:salute:
Providing that this turns out to be the last version of the graphics, I'm going to need to edit a notice into my first posting of branson.pcx that everything up to your post is a draft.
...I'm still rather interested in Green's(?) concept of a 'Space Race Players' faction set/conversion/scenario...

Funnily enough, and it wasn't presumptuous, on my LinBox the first three are living in a folder "Branson-RC1" -- but that was just because I needed to tidy up and thought we were getting somewhere near the finale for Mr Branson.
I like Green's idea too. Partly for that reason Dickie lands with an HQ, a Scout and a pod. Nothing else. No tech.
The bit of story I was writing might not work for Green's idea but , in a nutshell, Branson - and any others - have to hotfoot it from Terra after a nano-disaster circa 2037 (hence landing with almost zilch).
Apart from that -- who else should land contemporaneously with B?
Suggestions welcome.......
-
One random thought...
Centuari Ecology is actually so 1999.
We have an actual name for what that tech is and what that tech actually does.
In Situ Resource Utilization is what the scientists are calling it.
-
Good idea.

Green would be the best to answer that, unless we can get Uno interested.
Did they pitch in together on a starship?

Competition. Branson, Musk, etc would NEVER cooperate. They all used MRO data to select thier own landing sites. Plus, given Mars only is a relatively short hop, no need for a massive Unity type starship.
Remember... COTS money and beating the others to it for big profits over the others does not lend itself to joint operations.
-
Hmm. GeoModder did a major Mars scenario about a million years ago, of which we host a copy - someone should take a good look at it for stuff to
steal adapt and to avoid duplicating efforts, provided he did anything useful with customizing the planet. Some of the factions are pretty neat, but that's all I've looked at. http://alphacentauri2.info/downloads/?sa=view;down=23 (http://alphacentauri2.info/downloads/?sa=view;down=23)
-
Oh yeah...
The idea of escaping a catastophe sounds good. Otherwise it breaks immersion. You would have to deal with the fact if these guys are on Mars and Earth is still around, they could always use wealth to launch more supplies fromEarth. Then you deal with my interplanetary/sattellite deal I was talking about that SMAX can not do.
I think the Hoagland conspiracy thing is a good take.
Maybe in addition to Hoagland being correct, Niburu crackpot theory is actually correct, too! It pos up from behind the sun with little notice and collides with Earth!
-
Speaking of Richard Hoagland... I just cannot resist this urge to show the TRUE relationship of George Noory and Richard hoagland. Swiped, of course from Coastgab!
-
I thought they were only business partners.
-

I can almost recall that, but never played it
My woolgathering had Mr B and many others investing in LEO manufacturing facilities for advanced pharma, high strength polymer fibre, quantum state electronics and other suchlike fantasies presumably best produced in micro gravity environments. At the time of the "Panic" this had grown to a respectable transcorporate industrial base with numerous residents.
With a loss of market / disaster below, they took the whole thing in a low energy orbit via ITN to Mars.
Other escapees naturally use alternate routes.
-
There's at least a dry map he worked over...

There actually are folks that talk about something like that from time to time on NSF. Of course, they shoot down anything that discusses things like making space stations into interplanetary vehicles.
There's at least a dry map he worked over...
. Yeah, you are going to need a dry water map.
Also, trees? It is a great idea to bring them. But, the soil on Mars is weird. The pressure and temp extremes would require domes for something like that. Domes would be rough to do right off. Also, radiation. Mars has no protective magnesphere.
-
Also... Mars IS a weird place. Terrain modding would still be needed.
Mars even has geysers!
-
The rover should use the first camera more often. It takes prettier pictures than the second.
-
Terrain modding can happen if it needs to, I've made 2 seperate terrains now (a strawberry fields drug paradise one and LE).
Branson3's logos seem a little pixelated... does anybody else agree? I'm not sure if the gold relief should be that sharp but it's something. And heh it's a collabrative anyway, it doesn't have to be all me (woo less work). XD
-
I think he does.
Just d/ld the Branson3.pcx and it's bugged. Mooks like I was being too clever reindexing it. Have to do it again.

-
Davy, I wanted to call your attention to this (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1237.msg3775#msg3775). You may find it useful in the future.
-
So what's next as far as this thing goes? I'd like to finish this off if possible. :D
-
I guess we're waiting on the playtesting, mostly. I'm sure Green's notion about the other players in the private space race complicates things for this.
-
Now I'd sure like to see the faction finished too, mind you; I've been in on multiple community faction projects, and I think doing it by committee is great fun, but this is the closest I've seen one get to wrapping up. It would be very nice to have something to show for it, for once.
...It's a pity about the Strategist project, too; it was looking filled with awesome...
-
Absolutely. I'd like to throw it on my site too if people are agreeable with that.
-
I know I don't mind.
-
Bump.
-
On the forehead. :O
-
