Title: installing unofficial patches
Post by: ariete on April 03, 2023, 05:06:38 PM
hi everybody, just in the last year i back to the game and tried Scient unofficial patch on vanilla game.
In the instructions notes, it's indicated i have to istall before the official game patch plus one or two more, now i don't remember, which are officialy distribuited time before.
My question is : do these unoffcial patch/mod have already the essentials patches (like even that for no cd for SMACX) or i have to install a part like i did for Scient (following installation instruction but something tell me didn't be necessary  :-\ .. at this point)
Now i would install Crossfire, which patch would you suggest me, mantain Scient (compatible with SMACX?), Yitzi or anything else. Could you explain me why and how to install once game is installed without any patch ? thank you  :ches:

I don't actually use Scient's patch.  Without actually looking at the docs and going by memory, I'm inclined to say you either read the directions wrong, or the directions are wrong.  What I've actually done the few times I've needed to look at a game with Scient's patch applied, is I've installed a GOG binary of the game.  Then I've dropped Scient's patch on top of it.  That's it.

Yeah, if you have the gog version then that's all you need to do. If you have a CD release then you may need the official patches. They're available in the downloads section of this forum (click "resources" in the top bar)

ah ok, so depends if it's GOG ver or CD ver. I've the CD version.
Anyway, these patch cover the NO CD utility ? for example Yitzi patch have it's own EXE, does it require to work with the CD ?

About which patch have you installed and play on your SMACX ?

thank you for your comments  :salute:

The GOG binary regularly goes on sale for $1.50 if you're driving yourself too nuts trying to do it the other way.

You should install the SMAC v4 patch and then the SMAX v2 patch. Both available here: https://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=downloads;cat=2 (or get the GOG version)

Then install the Scient v2.1 patch and/or Thinker and get playing :)

Either of the unofficial mods will remove the CD check.

Ok, so "always install Scient's patch last".  Which is what anyone would reasonably expect, I think.

the other one is that about avoid crashes playing vanilla smac having installed the expansion, now i dont remember how exactly is called, anyway would be necessary or unofficial patches/mods already resolve it ?

BTW, -1 is a cursed item in D&D rules.  Well technically the -1 might not make it cursed, but in the 1st edition, the cursed items were the ones with a minus modifier.

The scient patch patches both smac and smax (the expansion). I'm gonna unsubscribe from this thread now. Good luck :)
