Title: City working other bases' squares
Post by: Buster's Uncle on January 16, 2023, 04:13:16 AM
So I kept playing after an Alpha Centauri victory, waiting for one enemy to conquer the rest - and it's taking a while.  I'm land-blockading Nishapur of the Mongols, which founded late in a corner where there wasn't proper room for a city, overlapping the territory of two of mine, Marseilles and Boston.  -Also, I'm using the airbase cheat, which is why so many of those.

So check out the resource maps in the base screens:

...Nishapur is sitting on the invisible east edge of the map, the 'International Dateline', if you will, where ships go nuts if you don't cross carefully.  All the buggy double-worked squares are on the west edge, or beyond.  I've seen similar with polar squares in Alpha Centauri.  Someone with more experience than I with the cheat and scenario editors ought to do some experiments...

Interestingly, this's something I've seen some world map map makers successfully work around. There is a definite awareness of the bug.

Unfortunately, I've also seen some map makers put the overflow line right inside the middle of Central Europe. This is as broken as you imagine.

I ended up taking out Nishapur as annoying to contain.

Now I've given up on either remaining Civ to take out the other - but I'm curious if the year ever rolls over.  I'm going to try to keep it up till 5,000 AD.

That looks really cool but I'm guessing it's a nice photoshop effort hehe.. FoxAhead was working on coloured Civ borders for Civ2UIA but last I checked they weren't working still.

Oh, it's totally a shoop - or GIMPed, if you will.

hah yeah hopefully the coloured borders you made will be a reality one day though.. as you can see FoxAhead got pretty close with visible coloured borders for his Civ2UIA tool last year however it's not released as he couldn't get it quite working how he wanted as it revealed hidden cities.

However what he got done looked pretty bloody good to me heh. And I think you normally see borders before cities when running into them in SMAC, CTP & Civ3 anyway? Hope he releases it as an optional feature one day as its amazing work I really didn't think would be possible in Civ2.

I DO think something on those lines would be great,  AC has it all over II with the bases merely outlined, so it's more practical to leave the map grid on.

Have you refreshed and seen the postbit improvement?

...That game made it to 5,000 A.D., btw, without turning over - golly, doing that was boring...
