Title: Faction leader Unity crew ranks in canon

It seems like they're somewhat inconsistent between the in-game datalinks, Michael Ely's novella and subsequent novels, and maybe the amazing lore published to Firaxis' website. By the way, who wrote the website lore?

Some of them include how in the game itself Sheng-Ji Yang is the Unity Executive Officer, the highest ranking officer after Captain Garland(!), and in the novella he's both the X.O. and a doctor. Oh and he's Chief of Security on the old Firaxis site lore. And for some reason in the GURPS RPG supplement, he's wearing red glasses.

Another is that Santiago is the Unity Security Chief according to the in-game datalinks, but in Ely's fiction she's a stowaway, and in the old Firaxis site she's merely a lieutenant who's part of the security force.

There's probably more but I'm not going to bother to map it out. Has anyone done it yet.

So what do people think of all this? Personally I'm not too bothered, I don't see how there's any true "canon" and it's all up to creative interpretation anyway. I personally really dislike how the novella places a huge part of the blame of Planetfall on Santiago for the mutiny, but that's for another thread. I think it might even be possible to justify a few of these simultaneously.

In the case of Yang, being an XO and having the title 'doctor' is not exclusive. Everyone with a degree in sciences can be called a 'Dr.'. It doesn't necessarily mean he' a surgeon like Lal for instance.
