:announce: New!! Quizzes for your recreational needs!!!

Starting today, a new area has opened in the Recreation Commons: the Quiz area (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=SMFQuiz). :tada:
To access the new feature you have to select 'Commons -> Quiz (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=SMFQuiz) from the main forum menu.
You will find in there multiple quizzes from different knowledge areas.
Complete them and show to rest of the community who's the Quiz Master!
For starters we have a number of 10 quizzes for you to play, but many more will follow.
You can participate in quiz leagues (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=SMFQuiz;sa=quizleagues), check out the progress of the others (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=SMFQuiz;sa=statistics) and how you (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?action=SMFQuiz;sa=userdetails) stand compared to them.
You can even submit your own quizzes for the recreational needs of other SMACers.
And who knows, maybe someone will create an Alpha Centauri quiz.

Range of difficulty:
The program is rating each quiz based on the percentage of correct answers received from all participants in that quiz (which i think it's quite a good way to rate a quiz because the author can act subjectively when rating his/her own quiz).
If you find a quiz that has never been played, then it will have no rating. Those quizzes will be listed as Difficulty: 'Not applicable'

Awards:
The player with the most wins will receive the 'Quiz Master' badge: (http://alphacentauri2.info/awards/13.png)

I really suck at this.  :)

Anyway, the cult movie quiz seems to suffer from prematurily ended questions. Is there a limit to the number of letters in each question which hasn't been noticed?

Didn't have any probs myself. Could it be that the text is not wrapping in the browser that you are using?

Maybe it was a stress related thing... Anyway, it was just for that quiz. I'll investigate if it happens again.

Btw, I'm the new Quiz Master. However, I think that I can easily be beaten if more people would take more quizzes, so go ahead! (That's a challenge.)

You really should - I think I can be beaten pretty easily, to be honest. Either way, quizzes are fun! I've made one of my own, a kind of first attempt. It's about my native country, Sweden. It's probably pretty difficult for non-Swedes. If you score 5 or more points out of 12 I'd you've done really well!

Would it be possible with the current system to include a larger number of quotes, and then randomly select 20 for the quiz? That would make the quiz playable more than once.

yep. i mean.. sort of.. we can make a question for each quote in the game, make a special category for them and then use the 'quiz league' option which is a sort of championship with daily rounds of random questions from that special category.

I thought I would manage to get zero points on the "Sports People's nicnames" quiz, but at the last second I actually recognised a name. I think 1st place is up for grabs on that one, though. Not that computer game geeks are well known for their interest in sports... :D

I feel so stupid in comparison to all of you after looking at this and trying my hand at it.
4/10 on World Geography, 8/10 on Lord of the Rings.
Yep. It might've been 2/10 on World Geo, but I don't remember anymore.

Well, for stuff that actually matters I know American history 1620-present well.
Not a history buff or anything, but I could name every significant war in order and probably put a date on each one that has happened in the Yankee's history.
Example: "What state was General Robert E. Lee from?" -Stuff like that I can answer on the spot.
Uh... I know the history of the Gaming industry (consoles only) really well. But I'd have to be the one to start that.
Going to go figure out where I submit one of these things.

I managed a 4/10 on your quiz which I enjoyed playing. I like also the fact that you give an additional hint instead of the correct answer. Maybe you should increase the play limit to 2 in this case.. What do you think?

Yes, that one is not supposed to be published yet, it's a work in progress.

As a precaution I have set the maximum number of plays for my unfinished quizzes to zero. I have also removed them from categories. Maybe this will make them unplayable, or at least unsearchable they're finished.

Have fun with the new quizzes! Please note that some of the questions and answers in the "making of..." quiz are based on interviews and anecdotes from Brian Reynolds and/or other Firaxis people. This means that they might be subject to misremembering, etc. Don't hate me if you've heard a different version... At least I haven't made stuff up out of the blue.  O:-)

The reason for the short quizzes is that there is only one point awarded for each quiz (for the current winner). I think that SMAC/X quizzes should count further towards the Quiz Master title, so several short quizzes should be better than a few long ones in this category.

Anyway, three points are up for grabs, this time in the category we all love the best!

Well, I can confirm that you can find sometime unapproved quizzes in the "Random Unplayed Quizzes" area and the problem gets worse once you have only few approved quizzes left to play.  :(
There are only 17 quizzes in this category, so it's time to sort them out..
