Title: Age of Wonders: Planetfall

The Age of Wonders series were cool wargames in a fantasy world with all the usual races: dwarves, humans, elves, orcs, Goblins, Undead, Lizardmen and all others. You had the strategic map with limited empire-building and diplomacy and some kind of campaign from map to map. One of the most interesting aspects was the tactical combat: it opened in a new map corresponding to the terrain you were in and there were tons of fun.

I post here because this new iteration could interest SMAC players:
 - it's now a sci-fi setting in a far future
- goal is to conquer/dominate a planetary surface
- factions with strong ideologies and detailed background
- factions with pre-determined traits / others choosable through the commander
- customizable units
- some terraforming
- a past story and secrets to uncover

The synopsis:

As one of the heirs to the shattered Galactic Empire known as the Star Union, you emerge from a cosmic dark age to craft a new future. You travel to one of the many lost worlds of the old empire, where you will find many marvels among the remnants of this once great civilization.

On those planets – which vary in biome, geography, structure and surviving factions - you will need to rediscover lost technologies and social doctrines for your colonists to thrive. However; you are not alone. Other houses compete with yours to rebuild the Star Union and you will need both a carefully crafted arsenal and a firm grip on diplomacy if you are to have any chance at victory. The game takes place on one planet at a time, but there are endless worlds for you to discover.

So is the combat going to essentially be a reskin of AoW3?  That is ultimately where that game lost me, for all the bling, combat was very shallow

If you disliked the tactical combat in the former AoWs, you'll probably not like this one.
Note that you still have the option to automate combat (that would be more SMAC-like) especially when you are vastly superior.

Unfortunately, i can't find anymore another long video explaining the game in more details but you'll have a good idea.
Tactical maps have obstacles, chokepoints and such...
They say everything is destructible (like in the old X-com).
Lot of tactical options and we hope the AI shall be able to use them.
