Title: The Poetry Corner
Post by: Bearu on August 20, 2016, 11:06:46 PM
I may not have an extensive selection of poetry in comparison with other members, but I can announce a few favorite selections. What are your favorite poetry selections?

I enjoy the poem "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" by Emily Dickinson. The poem appeals towards the sense of emptiness that often surrounds the concept of fame in a society and the "inside-outgroup" mentality that pervades the various sectors in a society.

I also the poem "Kubla Khan; or, A Vision in A Dream" by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
I enjoy the poem because a possible interpretation of the poem involves the insight into the creative process behind a visionary in the artistic world. The poem further addresses a potential response of the public towards the creation from the visionary. The poem also appears to address the fusion of opposite elements into a single entity despite the potential contradictions that might occur with the particular subject.

I fancy "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner", also by Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Probably the nautical theme that I find so appealing, but the rhyme and rhythm of it all appeals to me too.

I recently discovered the poem "Korobeiniki" by Nikolai Nekrasov. The poem describes the relationship between a peddler and a reluctant peasant woman. I cannot appear to find a complete English translation of the poem. What does a person do when he or she wants to read a piece of literature from a language he or she does not know well?

You can try Google translate.

I don't think poetry translates very well. It loses rhymes, rhythms, alliterations and tones.

Esperanto is pretty flexible, though.
