Title: OLYMPICS
Post by: Rusty Edge on August 06, 2016, 03:25:44 AM
We're watching the opening ceremonies. My wife is grossed out by the bugs.

What are you looking forward to seeing in the Summer games?

Please feel free to post whatever here with regard to the title topic.

This seems to be turning out to be a national showcase like the winter Olympics were for Putin...

Well, the host nations generally strive for that, hoping that they will make up for the infrastructure costs in tourism.

I believe you misunderstood my wisecrack ;) SHOWCASE working out like it did for PUTIN.  -You know, an expensive disaster...

Oh. While I believe they would have benefited from a postponement, It's not obvious to me that they're dysfunctional. That said, a lot of empty seats when the Brazilian gymnasts were competing.

We're watching swimming. I always marvel at the way the water "boils" behind them, as if they had mini-motors, or were being chased by pirrhanas or something. Seeing as how it's Brazil, I guess that could be arranged.

I think the home team missed a training opportunity.

;lol

Some of my work in the renaissance was a strange sort of stand up comedy; you have potential as at least a gag writer...

Hah- you know I actually took an online course on joke writing about 1999. It may have been free, but it was limited to the first 25 people or something like that. The guy had been a staff writer for the tonight show at one point. Sadly, he had cancer and I think he wanted to pass on his wisdom rather than have it be lost forever. Obviously that was many computers ago, and I'm pretty sure I don't have any of the e-mails any more.

But I hope that I retained and internalized some of his advice.  I don't know if I have the timing for stand-up, or the desire.

THANKS!

We find it remarkable that we haven't seen a false start so far.

I look forward to observing some of the sexy ladies. I also enjoy not watching the publicity stunts from the special snowflakes athletes of the Olympics with the wealthy parents to pay for the significant financial expenses of the activities. The bourgeois tendencies of the people in the Olympics perpetuate a variety of warning sirens in my head.

Well, I tend to feel sorry for many of them. Like astronauts, they prepare all of their lives for something increasingly competitive, and then after  they succeed, there is sort of realization that their life has peaked, and they are not only in decline, but have no all-consuming goal and purpose in life, and that their personal achievement has little application afterwards.

That can easily put a person in depression.

Yes indeedy-do - what the astronauts and Olympians alike need, of course, is to find new purposes...  They are people of extraordinary ability, capable of focus and long hard work towards a distant goal - they have potential, as such.

So the American women won by 1.8 something seconds in the 4X 200 meter freestyle rely.
Ladecky was behind by .82 seconds when her turn came to run the anchor leg. She's rather dominant in the water. Pirrhanas on her toes.

Ladecky again, women's 800meter freestyle.  Widening the gap each and every length. On pace  to destroy her own world record, she's more than a body length ahead of it . Last lap. 2 seconds ahead of her world record.
Most dominant swimmer in the world.  Won by 11 seconds, I think. They didn't put the graphics up and I think they said she was faster than the men.... I'll have to check the net.

Congratulations to Usain Bolt of Jamaica, the world's fastest man, and the first to ever win the 100 meter dash in 3 consecutive Olympics.

I got to see some of the women's indoor volleyball. Amazing.

I met a delivery driver that claimed to know Usain Bolt when he was this-high. We discussed how ridiculously fast he is.

NBC seemed mostly focused on the American winners, and seemed to slack off when they suffered a defeat. Since I didn't know the final standings in volleyball, I looked them up.

I heard some members of the American Swimming team were acting in an appropriate manner after the events at the Olympics in Brazil. ;no

Yep. Post-performance all-night partying, went to use a gas station bathroom, vandalized it, got stopped by security, then told a story about getting robbed by people impersonating police. Of course there was an investigation, and the truth came out.

It'll cost him 5-8 million dollars in lost corporate endorsement deals.

The irony of it all is that the Brazilian authorities would have been understanding and hushed it up had he simply apologized and paid the damages from the beginning.

Sometimes you can serve as a bad example.

I have been at a loss all week to get what the big deal about that incident was.  -Not that acting like a drunk celebrity in public, and getting caught is okay, certainly not as a drunk celebrity national representative in another country  --- but I don't get what's so newsworthy.  Kids with hideous bleach jobs will be kids...
