Title: Quiz game
Post by: Buster's Uncle on August 03, 2016, 01:57:01 AM
Okay, everybody pretty much knows the rules if they've ever been in an OT forum much before.  I'm gonna throw out a question sort of thing, first one to answer gets to ask the next question, etc.  I'll start with an easy one, but trying to stump everyone is rather expected...

What was Hitler's dog's name?  -Bonus bragging rights for gender, breed, circumstances of death and other such details.

What was Hitler's dog's name?

Chamberlain (if talking the female variety)

I am sadly misinformed if that's the case - and I'm sure about this...

-In case he had another one I never heard about, I meant the one who was his dog in 1945.  -But fair's fair, and if you caught me out with another, post a link and it's all yours...

Wiki link to Hitler's female dog.  Admittedly, he only had this female dog from 1937 till May 1940.

Cute.  Hovertext is a thing.

Any real answers, anyone?

I can't recall, although a photo comes to mind.

Best Guess- Name- Bruno, breed German Shepard, and euthanized in the bunker at the time of Hitler's suicide.

Not Bruno.  Otherwise correct.

Think hilarious for a name coming from Hitler (though it was actually a comic strip reference - Germans loved American popular culture, I hear).

I'm guessing Rin Tin Tin is out. So is Roy Roger's dog Bullet.

Official wild guess- Sandy, as per Little Orphan Annie.

-Go ahead and google it, Rusty, so I can hand off -- no fun having a game stillborn with a stumper.  Sorry 'bout that.

It was "Blondi".

It wasn't coming to me. I thought of Dagwood, but his dog was named Daisy, and I knew that wasn't right. The name "Goldie" sort of floated to the to the surface when you hinted color, but I concluded that wasn't right at all, and essentially gave up.

Yeah; the first time I heard that one I assumed it was simple Aryan stuff, just a joke, and laughed out loud.

-They killed her testing suicide poison, and a new littler of puppies. :(

Give us a question, any question, my friend; there's some history in our community of history questions for this kind of thing, but we don't have to confine ourselves to that...

Premise- Everybody knows that the world's fastest mammal is a Cheetah which does zero to 40-something miles an hour in three steps, and can peak out in the 65-75m.p.h. range.

The second fastest cat is the Lion, which does a respectable 50 m.p.h. There are other mammals with aproximatelty the same top speed, and some are a little slower than lions, but better on endurance.

Question-
There are only 3 mammals ranked faster at top speed than Lions, but slower than Cheetahs. What are they?

Do Gazelle and Wildebeest fit in there somewhere?

Do Gazelle and Wildebeest fit in there somewhere?

Actually, this is fun looking this stuff up.

Widebeests- are equal to a lion in a sprint, and faster over distances. A good guess.

Gazelle- while it wasn't on my original list from Wikipedia, it is listed as 60 m.p.h. on a different wikipedia page, so I'll accept that  as a tie for second place behind the cheetah. Lorizael- 1 correct.

Impala- another good guess at the popular 50m.p.h., but it can do that speed in a zig-zag!

Okapi- I have to seek other sources, but it appears to be 35 m.p.h., but that's still fast in the woods.

Clue - Of the original 3 mammals on my list, one was a species of African antelope, the other two are New World critters.

Is it cheating to go upstairs and ask my mom's opinion?

Let's establish a quiz precedent. As long as they don't research the answers on your behalf, talking to your Mom is always allowed, and even encouraged. That's a good outcome. We all know that asking Mom isn't going to stop with a simple answer, it will entail a conversation.

Anybody object?

...Perhaps anything as active as a phone call is searching, but asking someone you live with or something VERY low-effort consulting a non-expert you're talking to anyway is not?...

I was thinking of it more in terms of it would be a good thing for most of us nerd guys to talk to our Moms regardless of pretext, but asking my genius wife with the database memory sitting beside me, or asking a question in a kitchen where the PhDs frequent might be an unfair advantage over those who frequent this forum.

Besides, Doctor Mylochka, can play for herself.  But I'd really like somebody else's input. We want this thread to become more than the Buncle and Rusty show.

Okay, fair enough.  Mom has a Master's in Edumaction, though...

I am the least educated person in my immediate family, on paper, with only two undergrad degrees...

My participation is curtailed by the fact that I know nothing and remember less. Also I've looked up the answers after not having the faintest clue and was surprised each time.

Hopefully we'll get another guess. I would have thought somebody besides me would have an idea about fastest animal in North America.

I've got stuff to do but will make a determination by midnight Central time.

Petey's mom -I rather doubt she finished high school- says white-tailed deer.  I say that's a mostly-forest creature who needs agility among the trees far more than blinding speed, and it's probably a plains or tundra animal built for and hunted on flattish ground, so I'm going to say bison and elk.

White-tail Deer- 47 m.p.h.

Elk- 44 m.p.h. , but apparently elk are inclined to fight predatory animals rather than run. Well they do have-  some serious head weapons, a protective mane, a nasty kick and they travel in herds.

Bison- 35-40 m.p.h.

Since there were no lucky guesses, the answers are-

#2 The Free-Tailed Bat - 60 m.p.h.
(I never would have guessed that one. The ones I know are quick, but only fly about 5 or 10 m.p.h.)

Some attribute such flying capabilities specifically to the Mexican free-tailed bat.[27] Tail wind is what allows free-tailed bats to reach such high speeds.

( I say regardless, this means that this bat has mastered flight in a bird-like manner, unlike other species of bats )

#3 The Pronghorn - 55 m.p.h. ( the one I knew of as a game animal ) The pronghorn (American antelope) is the fastest animal over long distances; it can run 56 km/h for 6 km (35 mph for 4 mi), 67 km/h for 1.6 km (42 mph for 1 mi), and 88.5 km/h for 0.8 km (55 mph for 0.5 mi).[1]
( I guess there used to be a cheetah-like cat providing evolutionary pressure )

#4 The Springbok- 55m.p.h. The springbok, an antelope of the gazelle tribe in southern Africa,[35] can make long jumps and sharp turns while running. Unlike pronghorns, springboks are poor long-distance runners.[1]

SINCE LORIZAEL HAD THE ONLY CORRECT GUESS, IT"S HIS TURN TO POSE THE QUESTION. I got stuff to do tomorrow anyway.
