Title: European IP players community
Post by: L29Ah on December 30, 2015, 11:00:17 PM
I'm new to this forum but i don't see any new IP games being played recently, and don't feel like a turn per day is a sane pace for the game like this. So i want to publish a small community of gamers that play multiplayer SMACX some evenings/weekends (UTC+2/3).

We used to play for about ~5 hours per week avg for the last several months. We use N2N VPN as a transport layer for SMAC, XMPP (Jabber) to arrange a game and chat about it, and Mumble sometimes for voice chatting in game.

Find us there: xmpp:smac@conference.bitcheese.net

My advice is to be patient and check back once a month or so - we get several people a year looking for IP games, but never at the same time...

Since I have bronchitis godknowswhyinjuly, this weekend will be probably the only one I can actually play IP for a long time. Are you there, L29Ah? And I'm sorry but can't talk too much these days, so I can say 'hello' via headphones at most and then switch to keyboard.

What's that strange address you posted?

It's Jabber conference room: http://www.jabber.org/faq.html#chatrooms (http://www.jabber.org/faq.html#chatrooms)

I barely follow Russian letters and understand words only insofar as they're similar to Polish. But I guess it's no rocket science to set up a chat room and a game (IIRC, Hamachi and Skype was all we needed).

Lemme know if you have time Saturday or Sunday.

Yeah, you only need Jabber and n2n and we speak English.
2-3 players will have time Sat and Sun, I presume.

Hmm, n2n page is not there:

http://www.ntop.org/products/n2n/ (http://www.ntop.org/products/n2n/)

And my Firefox warns me against following this link due to insecure connection:

https://register.jabber.org/ (https://register.jabber.org/)

Any less shady software we could use? I can't think of any single reason against Skype, really. ;)

I use n2n from svn: https://svn.ntop.org/svn/ntop/trunk/n2n/n2n_v2 (https://svn.ntop.org/svn/ntop/trunk/n2n/n2n_v2)
It sucks indeed, and we're going to move to openvpn soon.

You can use any of the lots of free xmpp servers there. Most of them are accessible for registration from within a xmpp client. bitcheese.net, for instance.

Gentlemen, I just checked those three links, first gives me a 404 error, too, and my browser SWEARS the other two have infectious net herpes.

-As much as I want some IP to happen, I can't encourage anyone to go to any of the sites linked thus far.  You see how it looks, right?
Skype is indeed user-friendly as Kirov points out...

All right, I admit we are using some obscure means of communication :)

I can think of few reasons not to use skype, like it being proprietary, known to violate user privacy, not having sane logs, etc.

How about IRC? all you need to do is to go here https://webchat.quakenet.org/ (certificate not expited), think of a nickname, type #smac in "channels" and press "Join chat".

Best way to install n2n on windows is that https://sourceforge.net/projects/n2nedgegui/. You can join IRC and we will help you set it up in realtime.

Ok, guys, I'll look at n2n, later tonight or tomorrow. Sorry, I'm sure you have only good intentions, but for a moment I was sure I'm gonna pass.

Nothing personal, just imagine your grandpa calling you like "So I met this guy online, L29Ah was his name. He sent me some links, either dead-end or insecure. And then there was this website with a skull on it, a slogan "web browsers must die" and a bunch of links with likely downloadables. Yes, of course I downloaded and installed everything he told me to, why?!" ;)

Well, we'll be in touch. :)

You know guys, scratch that. I read more on your website, about "Russia", "sexuality" and "trans-sexuality" and figured that I'm gonna pass anyway. Sure, SMAC is a completely non-political hobby and I myself make the effort not to write on this Command Nexus forum anything which can start any kind of flame war, but when I know what BS can be spouted by fellow players, it taints my opinion about them somehow. It's not that I'm easily offended or something, really not, it's just obvious to me that we're not gonna like each other after a Saturday evening spent together.

Have a nice weekend, though!

I wonder how have you correlated the web site of the xmpp server i advised you to use to my hobbies and whether you'll be able to have a good game of smac, but okay, i have some other things to do too.

Too bad SMAC doesn't feature the hybrid turn mode. Some games turn into clickfest quite fast when the simultaneous turns are enabled.
