Title: A world full of surprises
Post by: t_ras on March 10, 2012, 09:44:19 PM
As you land in this new plannet, in an unexpected way, you figure out the little you know about it...and about what ever is waiting for you there. Luckily you have a basic map of the planet the main computer managed to make before the break apart and the frequncies to what you hope, are the other factions comm links.  Not sure if you really want to call them though...
Well...nothing you can do now, no way back and your poeple are looking up to you and waiting for orders, if you hasitate, you loose them.
"Open the pods" you hear your self saying, "we're going out!"

:attn: The goal (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=1455.msg4035#msg4035) is pair victory of two humans which can not be military.
The map is visible, but fog of war is activated, so it is more realistic.
All factions have all the comlinks and may use it from the begining.

Bari -> Armageddon   PK
Earthmichael   GAIA
demiurg   t_ras

The goal is pair victory of two humans which can not be military. The map is visible, but fog of war is activated, so it is more realistic.
All have all the comlinks and may use it, as I believe it is more realistic also.

I have a question of the pairing up.

Is there some point in the pairing where the tearms are irrevocably linked?  Otherwise, you have to be very wary about contributing to the success of your partner, if they can change alliances after you have contributed to their growth.

I would strongly prefer it if between the 4 of us, at some point we declare permamemt teams.

t_ras, since you wrote the scenario based on pair victory, what did you have in mind here?
Title: Re: A world full of surprises
Post by: t_ras on March 11, 2012, 06:37:05 AM
I was thinking you can change sides whenever you want.
Notice it can not be more then two players also, which means if you leave your partner at the last moment to win with someone else, you would have to convince that someone to leave his partner first.
On one hand this means you can play with a partner all the game and then in one last turn be left for victory with another one. That means you can not accept a situation where you are the "small" partner, all 4 humans will have to be sure they are at the same level if they dont want to be be left for some one else. But again, this last scenario will probably be possible if you have two strong factions and two weak ones, else there is no reason for the partners change.
This type of game will emphasise diplomatic game.
On the other hand you can choose to enforce the pairs after a fixed number of turns (60-80?) and then the game will emphasise collaboration and good planning.

I was thinking of the first type, but is you who should enjoy it, so it is your call.

well, i got your idea from the first time, and it allows players to be cunning. we will have to be carefull who we will make an alliance with. i loved it then, love it now  8)

If we are going to have a team win, I like the idea of have the possibility of a permanent (unbreakable) pact.  No one is ever forced to enter into such a pact.  But if someone agrees to a perma-pact, then they cannot break the pact for the rest of the game, enforced by the CMN.

I have been playing diplomatic games for over 30 years, dating back to the original board game version of Diplomacy, the board game version of Civilization, etc.  What I have found that in the long run, the best way (to me) to play is to never break your word.  So if I agree to a 20 turn pact, I won't backstab on turn 18 even if I could get a great advantage from it.  If i agree to a unbreakable pact, I won't break it even if it causes me to lose the game.  In the long run, my reputation for always keeping my pacts results in games which I find to be much more enjoyable.

Of course we will have regular (breakable) pacts as well, that is fine.

t_ras, will you enforce an unbreakable pact if two players agree to have one at some point during the game?

Title: Re: A world full of surprises
Post by: t_ras on March 11, 2012, 07:36:19 PM
I have no problem enforcing this, though I would suggest you not to make does pacts too early, you might not know what you'll be loosing.

I just remember I was also a "Diplomacy" player. I used to make pacts with every one till I could win and in the last turnI would break all pacts and win. I did it again and again, and people stil made pacts. this is because you never noe if and when you will be cheated, and if you are offered and fair pact which does not give too much to the other side, you will accept. what you dont know is that the other side has the same pacts with every one, and a little bit from every one is a lot...I loved that game....I almost never lost.

Bari,

Your resend of the save is STILL the save starting the Peacekeeper turn, asking for Brother Lal to enter his password.  I need the save from after the Peacekeepers have finished, that asks for the Gaians to enter their password.

Please open the save yourself to make sure that it is asking for the Gaia password before you send.  Thanks!

Seems like the game is stalled?

I am going to be out of pocket starting early Sunday morning until Friday night.

If I get a turn on Saturday, I will play it and pass it on, but otherwise I won't be able to see it until Friday.  So maybe if whoever has the turn will cycle it through, I can get it to pass on before Sunday.

This is going to be a strange scenario.  Marr starts out ungodly powerful, secret projects and all.  Yang has the perfect secret project to compensate for his primary weakness, lack of energy and therefore technology.  He does not even have to bother with research, just wait until the other factions get it, and he gets it.  Marr and Yang are both going to be very hard to survive against, much less beat.  And the Spartans are not far behind in power.  So I am not sure how this scenario is going to work out.  It may be much more of us try to work together to defeat the AI players than playing directly against each other.

The game is going VERY slowly.

demiurg, did you get the last turn I sent?  If so, did you already play and send it?  I just resent the turn just in case, since it has been a week.

If you do not get a turn, you need to post or email to let me know as soon as you see my post.

Cheers!

Earthmichael

If  you are getting a bounceback, let me know.  My email seems to be working fine.  I typically get 50 messages/day.

The goal is pair victory of two humans which can not be military. The map is visible, but fog of war is activated, so it is more realistic.
because of the specific scenario requirements, turning the faction to the AI is not an option here.

i see demiurg was here yesterday. i will PM him.

Post by: Earthmichael on December 24, 2012, 04:32:37 PM
I think there is a bit of a problem with the scenario design.  I beat back Sparta successfully (with PK), but now Usurpers are killing me.  They destroyed 3 more units last turn, including the last of my mind worms.  I know the power graph shows me leading, so poor pitiful me, but this is because of the infrastructure investment I have made.  I never expected to have to repel this level of firepower at this early point in the game.  I have infiltrated Usurpers, so I am able to see their units, which I have attached.

To hit the high points, they have 2 Ogres and 15 rovers!  How exactly am I supposed to fight that, after already having exhausted most of my initial forces on Sparta?!?

I know I am a very good player, but I don't think this is possible.

Placing a player sandwiched between Sparta and Usurpers is a VERY BAD IDEA!!!  In fact, having Usurpers in the game at all is a bad idea.  The Alien factions are far more powerful than any other faction, and it is extremely difficult to win against them unless you first have a long time (60+ turns) to make a superior build.

Anyway, does anyone else share a border with Usurpers?  I think the Free Drones may have contact, which may be why they are down so low on the power graph.  I think the only chance we have is for ALL the human players to try to help each other to beat back Usurpers.  Because once they destroy me, I doubt anyone else will survive.

Finally, does anyone have Attack 4 that they can trade or give me, or can anyone research it pretty soon?

I guess I should have given up the usurpers.but maybe you should just ruch to the main iseland.
Title: Re: A world full of surprises
Post by: Earthmichael on December 25, 2012, 01:07:36 AM
Yeah, I guess I kind of screwed this up.  As soon as Sparta started coming after me, I should have evacuated to the main island.  But early in the game, I thought Hive was waiting for us there.  I did not realize it was an unoccupied (treasure trove?).

Now I have two SPs built, and I am reluctant to run, and hand them off to Usurpers.  Oh well, maybe the human players will be willing to help me try to fend of Usurpers, or maybe they will just flee.

If I can get 4 attack before the Ogres advance too far, I might be able to eventually stop Usurpers.  Luckily, the AI still plays in a fairly brain dead manner, despite the crushing superiority of forces.
Title: Re: A world full of surprises
Post by: t_ras on December 25, 2012, 07:25:15 AM
My foult. I should have though Usurpers would be too much and I took it for granted you'll think about the mail iseland escape.
Any way, since no one player can win the game alone, I guess humans should be help in each other at the beggining to take care of the AI.

I have to admit I am delightfully puzzled by Marr's reluctance to pound me into the ground.  He keeps sending 3 or so 2/1/2 recon rovers each turn to probe me, which I can easily destroy with no problem.  But he has 2 Orgres, over a dozen more recon rovers, 8 scouts, and has recently build some 4/2/2 rovers and some 4/3r/1 infantry.  He could tear through my defenses like tissue paper, if he hit me with everything he had, but for whatever reason, he is only probing.

I was wondering, is Marr focused on someone else?  Is he destroying the Free Drones?  Is anyone else in contact with Marr?

Is Marr not actively attacking you at all?

I am killing about 3 units per turn that Marr is sending my way.  I can do this indefinitely, unless he sends an Ogre or a 4/3r/1 infrantry my way, or starts flooding me with most of his rather large army.

I might have set up their priorities to research instead of attacking. Interesting to check it...

Instead Colonel Corazon has the priority to attack with all forces no matter what I am giving her.
You should have changed her priority to research by herself, goddamn  ::)

Marr hit me with another 3 recon rovers, which I killed.  I hope he never wises up, since I am on my SECOND sidetrack toward HEC.  I can't seem to get 3 defense to save my life  ;).

I also had early on spent almost all my forces beating back Sparta (before Marr found me), but for some reason they have not attacked any of my cities for the last 5 turns or so.  I don't have Sparta infiltrated (like I do Usurpers), so I have no idea what kind of force they have available.  All Sparta sent at me were 2/1/2 rovers, which my 2 defense in a city is able to handle (just like with Marr, except Marr has now built some 4 attack units).  I also spent my only Ogre hitting back on Sparta.  And I have never given Sparta or Usurpers ANYTHING, because I figure they will just attack anyway, and be more powerful because of my gift.  If you are trying to appease Sparta with gifts, that is a BIG mistake that will end up hurting you (and the rest of us) badly.

I think you got no more attacks from Sparta because it's hitting me hard. And now he's coming along with 4/1/2 Rovers and 4/1-Squad. At least, I learned my lesson and will never ever again give 'em anything... :-\
Title: Re: A world full of surprises
Post by: Earthmichael on February 03, 2013, 08:02:41 PM
At least with the enemy haviing only 1 defense you can attack with 2/1/2 rovers of your own for active defense.  That is what I do with Marr.  However, Marr has built some /x/3r/x units, and I don't have anything that can penetrate 3r defense.

For what it is worth, I sent two rovers and a worm your way, to see if I can relieve your pain.

If anyone gets HEC, will you PLEASE trade it with me for anything you want.

Guys, If the game is too dificult to be fun, I can allways restart it with more docile AI (Or at least without the SPs).
Your suposed to have fun.

Keep it like this, I won't complain.

I am a little frustrated by the sidetracks that keep me from getting HEC, but as long as Marr will keep probing (and not all out attacking) for 10 more turns or so, I should be able to get the techs I need to defend myself.

I am glad he is just sending out his daily probes!  No complaint there!

Thanks to Lal for trading me HEC!

Marr came after me with a 4/2/2(3) elite rover this turn!  I took two casualties taking that monster down, but I got rid of it.

I am now open for trading techs with anyone who wants, since I don't have to worry about being slowed down getting HEC.  So message me if you are interested.

I have had Marr infiltrated for some time now, but I just realized the following facts:

1.  Marr's Industry rows are only 6 wide.  He is running Planned, which accounts for 1, but it seems Marr is getting a +3 extra industry bonus.
2.  Marr's Growth rows are only 5 wide.  He is running Planned, which accounts for 2, and the faction bonus is 1, but he seems to be getting an extra +2 Growth bonus
3.  Marr gets 3 free units before he starts getting drones.  On transcend, a faction only gets 1 free unit before drones, which I presume is all of us human players.

As an alien, he already gets a bunch of extra bonuses, such as free recycling centers and a special facility, but this is normal, but makes aliens a quite powerful faction without these 3 extra bonuses above.

And he started with a secret project that puts command centers in all of his bases (which we all knew right away).

I don't know if Sparta and Hive are getting extra bonuses as well, but if so, that could explain why the AI are so much more difficult to handle than expected in this game.

Anyway, just thought you would want to know.

You can open up my Gaia save and take a look at Marr.  I presume you have the password to open it.

Maybe the AI boost is automatic when the human players are transcendent?  I am neither a modder or a moderator, so I have very limited knowledge here.

The Free Drones are already very weak.  If they do nothing, it will be like just handling them over to the Aliens.  It would be better if someone else could take over.  I will give a replacement player most of my tech to help offset their weak position.  Can an admin give the new player some ECs to help him get on his feet?

Thanks for electing me.  Here is what I found out from infiltration:

As you probably know, all of the AI factions cheat horribly.  They manufacture with at least +3 industry bonus more than they are entitled to, have minimal drone worries, grow super fast, etc.

Usurpers have 10 Cities, and are by far the most powerful.  If you want details, let me know, and I will give next time.  I am currently at War with Usurpers, and they replace units so fast that even with better strategy, I am hard pressed to hold them back.  Who else is at war with Usurpers?

Hive has 6 cities.  I have no contact with Hive.  If anyone wants details, let me know, and I will give next time.

Sparta has only 4 cities.  Here are the details:
Fort Superiority 4-3r-1.  This is my current target.  I think I can take this city in 2 turns.
Sparta Command 4-34-1, 1-3r-1, 1-3r-1.  A bit of a defense, and I don't know where it is.
Blast Rifle Crag 1-1-2, 1-3r-1.  I don't know where this city is either.
Defensive Freehold 1-3r-1.  I hope Lal can move against this city!  Are you interested, Lal?  If you are not going to join the fight against Sparta, I am going to back off, because I don't want to fight a 2 front war unless I have help.

That's the gist of it.  If you want other information, just ask, and I will give whatever details you want.

Thx for the information.
I fought Sparta back right this turn, and got now Weapon-4, so he's withdrawing. I will build up my attack forces now and will hopefully get into the Spartan territory the next five turns. So hold on, and we will eliminate that Sparta threat. Anyhow, you may concentrate on your other front, because I hope I can handle Sparta, if you just hold them back at your frontier.
I will move against Freehold.

Usurpers are pushing hard, but I think I can stop them.  I pulled back from Sparta, to focus on Usurpers.  I am still wiping out Spartan rovers probing my south side, but am taking very few casualties.  I wish I could say the same for the Usurpers.  We are trading of 3-4 casualties per turn, on each side.  I am defending with cheap 2-row 1-3-1 defenders and counter attacking with cheap 2-row, 6-1-1 attackers, but Usurpers build 40% faster than they should be building, based on their society!

I have my energy 100% focused on labs at the moment, hoping to beat the Usurpers with a tech advantage.

I think all of the AI cheat like crazy.  They seem to have at least +3 production and +2 growth more than can be accounted for by any possible society choices.

I destroyed a Spartan city that was encroaching on my territory from the South.

I forgot to mention about Cloudbase Academy nearing completion.  Well, it is completed now.

I finally have Usurpers on the defensive!  They build a ton of units (due to the ramping up [cheating] industrial capability), but I am mowing them down now.  I expect to capture a Usurper city in 3 turns.

I have no contact with Hive, no clue where they are.

I reloaded after a crash.  I don't reload after battles; this turn, I lost 2 battles after reloading where the odds were in my favor, and I won them the first time, but I have to reload after a crash, and subsequently lost the battles.  So the reload was not done to help me; it ended up turning me.

Would it mess up the game if we all moved to Yitzi's patch?  It seems to have fewer bugs/crashes.

Title: Re: A world full of surprises

I fear of moving to a different patch in midgame, spcially because I think that I know remember somthing Yitzi said about keeping data in the sav file in a different way (I I should have remembered this when you and Ronin moved to the patch...)
And if you lost a battle you won I think it would be fair to let you replay.
Title: Re: A world full of surprises
Post by: Earthmichael on September 11, 2013, 08:35:09 PM
It is the nature of crashes.  If I had previously lost the battle, but crashed, and then won, I would have kept the won result, because the crash was not my fault, and otherwise, it would require more reloads for me to lose.

In this case, I had won a battle, then crashed, then lost, so I keep the lost result, just as I would have kept the won result earlier.  Because otherwise would require more reloads.  I don't think we want to go there.  I do sometimes save a checkpoint in a very long turn if I am about to do something risky like popping a pod which could wipe out all civilization with a tidal wave.  Then if disaster strikes, I can reload to the moment before, with nothing lost.

I really have the Usurpers on the ropes now.  If you are still being bothered by them, I would be surprised.  I would think they would be 100% concentrated on defense right now.  I took another 3 of their cities this turn.

One think I think is weird is that you can never capture a Usurper city of size other than 1.  If the city is larger, then a bunch of colony pods flee the city, reducing it to size 1.  So you always have to grow the cities from size 1.

Anyway, I should be done finishing off Usurpers in another 3 turns or so.  Sparta is no longer a threat.  Does anyone need some help with the Hive?

Once we eliminate the highly cheating AI players, what is supposed to be the purpose of the game after that?  Are we to try to achieve ascension?  It says specifically that we are not trying to achieve a conquest victory, so I have been fairly freely trading conquest tech to fellow human players.  Are we now supposed to win by ascension, economic victory, or  planetary vote?

I think we should go for those kind of victories to have a new goal.
Title: Re: A world full of surprises
Post by: t_ras on September 30, 2013, 08:48:25 PM
I think the only strait foward "pair victory of two humans which can not be military" is diplomatic victory. Although maybe if two player run to tracendence (or money) together, that might be enough. Although then we need to have amechanism to state the second winner. Lets say that there is (of course) one winner wich is ovius and the second has to be one (and the only one) that was at least 10 turns before victory pacted to the winner.

As far as I can see, the situation is as follows, correct me if I'm wrong.

Ronin (MIA) - Univ
Arma (still around) - Lal
Geo (still around) - Gaians
t_ras (MIA) - Domai

And t_ras is the CMN, right? Can you tell me in a few words what the in-game situation is? Have you already paired up as I see it on the first page? Can I ask you to grab a screenshot with the powergraph and secret projects, so that it's easier to find a replacement?
Title: Re: A world full of surprises

Frankly, I don't really consider this to be "my" game. Just inherited it from EM I think.
Gaians (the faction I'm playing) look about top in this game, AI Marr was eradicated and there doesn't seem to be a purpose anymore.
Title: Re: A world full of surprises

For what its worth, I am out of the hospital and can play again, if needed.  I think Gaians were doing really well when I had to leave.  But it looks like Geo is still around, so let me know if you want me to take back the Gaians.
