Title: Retro Gaming
Post by: Flux on December 17, 2014, 12:25:06 AM
I'm pretty into retro games. I figure there must be some other people who feel the same way and aren't completely into the PC Master Race.
Let's talk about that!
Retro could mean anything before the 7th Console Generation.
I'll try and start the conversation.
Well, my personal favorite console is probably the most modern thing you could call retro. The Sega Dreamcast. It was the first  console to include a modem. Also, the memory card doubled as a handheld significantly less powerful than the GameBoy. My favorite game on it is Sonic Adventure. Go figure.
It has quite a cult following still. Infact, here is a quote for a game being released for it by an independent developer in 2015.
“Ameba tells the story of a veteran policeman and his obsessive quest to find the truth about some cases he is pretty sure were closed under false pretenses. He is the only one who has seen the truth, and his mission is to uncover it to bring justice once and for all. It will be set on nowadays Spain, but it might have some flashbacks to the past.”

Anyone else ever own it?

Hmm. I might as well have just titled this
9/9/99 - The Ultimate Gaming System
Dreamcast master race!

Ehh, personally I'm more of a Genesis person. But that's a different generation.
Although I can almost confirm you have Super Mario Bros.

I'd have to root around - it's actually Buster's Daddy's Nintendo, and a friend has most of the game cartridges, and I haven't laid eyes on most of the games in 20 years or so.

I did win at Mike Tyson's Punch-Out; I actually have a win I videotaped, somewhere.

There was an off-brand fantasy game, something about a tree, that I was very fond of, and a war game, I think the name was Desert Fox...

Yeah. ;lol

No consoles at my place. Oldest game I can remember was a UFO shooter on a Commodore 64. It had to be loaded by tape. ???

I have a bunch of those for my still-working TRS80 Color Computer 3, if I could find them and the tape ain't too degraded.

Well, yes, but one of them controls like crap.
Now list 3 and you have a really good shot of getting it right.

Okay.
One of them is Sonic Spinball.
Now you don't need to know anything but english numerals.

You tell me.
Huh, this is really stupid.
Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic Spinball (spinball is a loose cart)
There was also this one game I knew nothing about that was a loose cartridge. I almost got it for $4.
The only thing is that I had to use 6 cue tip ends to make Sonic Spinball work. 6!

Have you tried pencil erasers?
And rubbing alchohol?
No.

Also, upon hearing that I had gotten a Genesis I got a free Atari 2600 from my uncle. And there was a copy of River Raid in it.
That makes me happy.
But it was even filthier than Sonic Spinball.

I think you're thinking of Desert Commander.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Commander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Commander)

Fond of that, but my favorite wargame on the NES was Conflict.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_%28video_game%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conflict_%28video_game%29)

HEXASOURYOKUSEN  In case anyone has a copy and needs to access the hidden last level.  (from memory, might be a SLIGHT misspelling somewhere.)

Yeah; that's the one.  I reinvented the pike square playing that, only with artillery.

Here I am attempting to collect every main-series and spinoff sonic title on the Genesis.
I bought out my local gaming store's supply of old Sonic titles. Same thing with Amazon.
Sonic 1 - Missing manual
Sonic 2 - complete in good shape! :D
Sonic 3 - don't have  :-[ -Have gotten it in good shape with box/manual since this post.
Sonic & Knuckles - Cartridge Only
Spinball - Cartridge only
3D blast - complete but in bad shape :D
MBM - don't have :-[
I have the Steam ports of all of them, but after using a genuine genesis to get my fill, I can't go back to bad emulation. Although Steam does a surprisingly good job, it just feels right on the Genesis

It seems I've spent a considerable amount of cash laying around in my room. I have this one little crevice that all of my money goes into, it's interesting to note that I've accumulated around $80 in there.
Knowing me I've spent a considerable amount of it on Genesis games, and my collection is growing very fast. I now have every Sonic-related game except for Wacky Worlds (Which I don't plan to get, but it was basically Sonic's version of Mario Paint) and Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine which is a puzzle game that I probably wont get unless I see a loose cartridge of it at my local gaming shop.
I also got Vectorman. Yay? I probably blew through $50 up there. But the Genesis has definetly replaced Sega Dreamcast as my favorite console.

Going to try to mod one of these: (http://www.gametrog.com/GAMETROG/SEGA_Dreamcast_Information_Specs_files/shapeimage_6.png)
to have a green powered-on LED. Hopefully the stock power-light was 3mm.

I'm a lot of a Genesis guy too (well, Mega Drive guy), but one thing that you have to hand to the SNES people is that their favourite 16-bit console has a lot better audio than the Genesis. Not that there aren't Genesis games with great songs and sfx, but I guess the sound chip of the SNES is better.

Anyway, Flux, have you tried many non-Sonic games? Anything you recommend?

Yeah,  i have a few other cartridges, and i plan to get more. One thing that stands out is Vectorman which is an amazing run and gun. Like i said, i really don't have a lot of other games. Definetly try Vectorman though.

LED Mod update...
Took apart the Dreamcast and looked at this: (http://i.imgur.com/czuyrK4.jpg)
Made an attempt to get these to light up in the same place: (http://i.imgur.com/aff21qY.jpg)
Turns out the LED in there is a screw-in bulb... I don't have the right type of LED. Oh well.
At least I can still play this: (http://i.imgur.com/Le6zwbf.jpg)

My son's been on a sonic kick himself lately.

Have you tried the anthology collections on the 3ds?

Anthology? As in music? No, I just download any level tunes/themes I like and put them on my 3DS SD card. That actually happens to be the only current-gen platform I own. Songs that are nice to listen to out of the games are Ice Cap zone from Sonic 3, the main themes for all the Sonic games 1999-present and maybe "What I'm Made Of" if you're into any kind of rock songs. There is plenty more from there, but thats all you'll ever need.

I can give you opinions on all the main-series Sonic games in their original console form (No emulators here!) except '06, but I'm really not too worried about getting that one. And I can tell him that the best way to experience Sonic is as follows: Start with Sonic Generations on the 360/PS3, or if you use the PC make sure you have a 360 controller plugged in. Then play Sonic 2 or 3 and Knuckles. If you like it, get yourself a Genesis. It costs less than that shiny, new, crappy COD game. And it just feels so much better to be playing it on the genuine console. Don't get the new AtGames "re-live the past" console either. It's basically a tiny computer with a cartridge slot built solely for emulating the Genesis. And it does that badly. In fact, I would mail you mine just to prove a point. I don't want it anymore, I have a real Genesis. After you've done that, I'd recommend trying out Adventure 1 and then go off to the other ones like Colors and Heroes. (Heroes should only be played 1 or 2 levels at a time though, and get the Gamecube version if you can.) Pick your path from there, if you do that you'll end up loving the franchise. Of course, if he's already on his kick then he knows that already.

Holy crap that was a long comment. I've pretty much dedicated the time I spend gaming to mastering all the Sonic titles I can, and I love them all.

Oh, you meant for the original DS. Yeah, I've seen them at stores. I've never bought one of them, though.
