Definitely not. It may prove to be a worthy heir, but it hardly walks in the same footsteps as AC.

I am a Star Trek fan, and I learned the folly of getting my hopes up a very long time ago.

AC was more about the colonial's political-ideological vision played out on a different planet, while BE moves the ideological consideration to how colonization is handled.  My feeling is they have opted to serilize the game of real-world ideological considerations.  This is the new politically-correct fisher-price model.

In some sense I like the idea of giving a "deeper" consideration to colonization, though the actual tech tree is probably silly.  But I doubt it follows down the regular path of administrative/economic considerations like AC did - or like any civ should.  I doubt that BE makes room for ideopoliticial vision, and while my criticism of the ideas of BE have softened, I still doubt it's actual gemaplay.

Lately games have been implementing "quest" systems.  But these definitely feel like cop outs to me.  These are a replacement for expanded interface, for instance, something like dealing with internal factions.

Its not hoping or anything, it's that we've seen BE gamplay through their videos, and it doesn't have the same style as AC - it shares many similarities, but they have different approaches to so many things.

BE is not doing well in this poll...

Mmm? It's not because BE isn't the sequel to replace SMAC that the game isn't supposed to be good/sufficient?

I would see that as a measure of sufficiency, but point taken.

Whether or not the game is good isn't determined by this poll- its just if its a successor to SMAC/SMAX. Which it is not.

i see some of you have strong opinions about Civ: Beyond Earth, so why don't you go ahead and make a prediction about the game and how it will affect our community: The Preditions Game (http://alphacentauri2.info/index.php?topic=10488.0)

I don't think of it as a sequel as it doesn't share continuity with AC. At best its a reimagining, but in that fails to describe it. It is a civilization game that happens in the future on another planet. A little more depth would be nice, but I like it.

I think the game will be good mind- I just don't think it will be a true heir to Alpha Centauri. I think if anything it is more the [progeny of unmarried parents] child of Civilization and Alpha Centauri at most.

...We should close this poll the night before release and do it over/again - I'd be interested in seeing if anyone's mind changes...

Perhaps because the poll is closed now?

The poll is still open. We just don't have that option anymore. It was conflicting with the latest security update to our forum software (SMF 2.0.9)

I'd eventually purchase the game if I liked the sound of mods made for it.  Otherwise Civ games just don't have the complexity for me to bother, though the "tech web" may or may not have something to it.

Put me in the "Definite Maybe" column. I wasn't very interested at first, but it has been sounding "better" lately.
